Colorado - Postmatch

- Berget is dangerous. Something still hasn’t fully clicked for him but he’s a constant threat. Love his ability to spin off defenders and break away. Twice he was fouled in desperation because he was free and clear

If you also notice he doesn’t really seem to celebrate with the team when they score, only really Villa. I wonder if he is struggling to settle in NY

How is a sweeper role not a CB? Isn’t that all just what you’re asking of the person in the position, not the position itself.

Pirlo played the #6. He didn’t defend, but he was still playing in that position. (Career-wise, I mean)

Anyways, who cares. He played CB tonight. It was a good decision. As I said, the less Sweat I see, the better.
Haha it's just words. What they mean to different people doesn't always make sense, but I see your point. To me, sweeper and CB have very different connotations though.

It is not something I care to argue about, for sure. Well, other than the argument I already made.

In any event, I don’t care what we call it. I liked it.

He’s playing the position like Lothar Mathaus played for Germany.

Schwallacus spider sense just got triggered with the mention of LM.

Thanks for this. I have tried to find a clear explanation of what xG does and does not account for, and this comes closest. I mean basic stuff like whether xG accounts for defensive positioning at all. It's hard to find an explanation that states things like that directly.

One problem with xG is that we only have one name for a stat that can cover a whole lot of methodological ground. As far as I know Strata offers the only public data that accounts for defense, but I'm not sure I've seen anybody using it for MLS. Seems like between them and StatsBomb we'll be getting more of that sort of thing soon.

As confused as I've been about what Berget is about. I think I figured out what he can bring to the team. He's not a real winger obviously, but he needs to stay high so the back line press works. Don't underestimate the press. The guy has a great work rate. If he can actually finish he'd be a real difference maker. For my own eye, I'd equate him to a poor man's Mario Mandzukic

If we're going to continue playing a 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1 I love having Ring playing CB. He's not a goal scorer, not do we need him to be. He can defens, tackle, and pass really well. Plus, if it gets Better and Shradi on the field with Villa I'm all for it.

Though I don't think we will go that route...there's no reason he can't be back there. There are plenty of world class defenders that aren't your typical center backs at first glance. It was really fun to watch to be honest. There's so many options with a 3-5-2 and tactics can change on the fly. This debate is probably second to the stadium talk.

This seems harsh. He had some bad touches and bad passes, but thought overall he had a good game. He won a lot of balls in the midfield, which was especially important since Ring was not there to disrupt, and he did start the sequences for the 1st and last goals

With Ring playing CB, I'm sure Herrera provided something like 50% of our team's total tackles, so I would say he had a good match whatever his other shortcomings may be.

Just wanted to shout out Ibeagha. He looks awkward on the ball, but his body positioning and awareness in defense are very strong and it’s nice to have a solid stand-in when Chanot is injured. Otherwise not much more to say that hasn’t already been said, though I would like to see us score 7 or so just once.

To Lothar or as a sweeper? My apologies if you said LM, I missed it, and was just adding some recognizable imagery to bolster your idea.
Oh no, I was just talking to someone IRL yesterday at the match about the LM comparison.

I wonder what's the situation with Cedric Hountondji. Isn't he good enough?

He looked cool warming up. Really tall. Reminds me of Hightower from Police Academy. What a great group of 7 movies. Or not. Still like 4 of them. Win.

If you've looked at his highlights with Malmö FF, you must have noticed, that he doesn't even celebrate his own scoring. I suppose it's his style, and he thinks it's cool to just turn away after scoring, like if he were saying "I told you so".

Just thinking about getting home with the jalepeno, calamari and prosciutto. Making sure he’s the king.
