Columbus - Postmatch

It sounded phenomenal, but the visual was kind of weird, not seeing any fans along the lines (at least in Yankee Stadium you have pitchside)

So happy they decided to put the supporters section under an overhang. It's great how much sound is made when they're not in a wide open section.
No pitch side was weird. Seemed like there was space for it, but maybe not if that was the warmup area by the benches.

Did he slip or was he pushed? The Ref let that one go and the moment he did I was worried about the counter with too few defenders and too much green in between.
It looked very soft to me. I don't think it was a foul.

I was trying to watch this again on the highlights, in person I thought it was a foul not called, which led to the quick transition to Higuain. But the highlight started when Higuain had the ball.

Watching that corner goal by Columbus again and boy was Brilliant a bitch on that goal.

Maaaaan, say it again! He got jockeyed there and I'm just SICK of watching him do stupid things on the pitch. I wish the guy well in his career but I hope he gets cut along with Khiry. We can use the space for better fits.

Yeah, it definitely wasn’t Brillant’s best showing but I don’t think he had the ability to even jump with Williams’ hands on both shoulders using them as a vault to elevate. Kind wish he would have just crumpled to the ground because that would have called attention to the hands. A moot point now.

Brillant has been scapegoated all season long. Yesterday was not his best, I can agree with you on that. But it's been the system that has failed us all season (when Brillant is subbed in). He has been solid when he's started., blamed as a sub because the system failed us, not his individual mistake. We simply cannot play 5 in the back and expect to hold the score.

A pair of things I want to touch on that I didn't see come up:

- We continue to need twice as many shots to score the same number of goals as our opponents. This worries me to no end. Why does it seem that EVERYONE else is converting at a much better clip than we are?

- This "Villa only/OPTA shot maybe" instruction from PV is baffling. Remember that play in the 2nd when Herrera ended up with the ball at the top of the box with PLENTY of space to shoot and he just walks it off and passes to Villa at the left post? Why in the ever-loving **** does he not take a shot there?

Thanks for the alternative look on the 2nd goal, George. I will go look at it again because I was totally of the belief that the fault was entirely on Brillant.

Seriously! We had 23 shots and 9 on goal and only put 2 in. Again, this boils down to who PV is putting in the lineup. Lewis should be starting, or should be the first one off the bench. There's no reason to put Shelton in anymore. His constant brain farts with the ball cost us goals.

The Crew's first goal was the kind we seem to give up much more than we get, where one offensive player gets behind the entire defense and has 1-on-1 with the keeper, or maybe one defender. We had 2-3 breaks that seemed like they could lead to chances like that yesterday but slowed down before a shot came.
It just seems that we get a lot of shots with 3-5 defenders between the shooter and the goal, and it's not just that every team packs the box against us. We just give them lots of time to get back.

Yep, we do not look to break fast into the offensive third anymore, which is crazy since that’s how we played all last year and the start to this year. We seem way to tentative in wanting to reset the ball in he midfield with everybody in their assigned positions and if not, we kick back to the defenders and/or GK. It’s maddening really. And there were so many times yesterday when the ball was kept on the left with noplace to go and Jack was standing on the far side with his hands up and no defender within 10m.

It’s also crazy that their GK had 7 saves, most of which were tough and highlight real types, so the shots weren’t just going right at him.

This is maddening to me as well. Goals (especially in MLS) are scored on mistakes and transition. I know PV wants to build from the back, but the slow pace of play means that you will need a perfect sequence (or brilliant individual play) to beat a drawn in defense. You want to get a defense back pedaling, and with one or two passes get a guy in space and boom - goal. It's why Marsch (to a lesser degree now) and Tata have had so much success. Disrupt the other team and off to the races.

There are two incidents I'd like to bring up regarding the referee...

- We had a transition play, I believe just before the end of the first half, and Herrera was grabbed with two arms. This was called a normal foul and not a yellow card. We've seen all year that this should be a yellow card.
- During the shouts from the players for Moralez's foul in the box to be a penalty, Mataritta was showing Elfath the TV box symbol. By law, this is dissent and should have been given a yellow card.

Elfath, despite acknowledging the VAR, and overturning the penalty call, had a bad day.

I was harsh on the "We want Pirlo" fans near me in an earlier post, so I also want to share a much more pleasant Pirlo story. There was a young woman sitting next to my family who had a "Pirlo Te Amo" sign. She was trying to get his attention all game. When the players returned to the bench after halftime (the NYC bench was more or less right in front of us) she walked down the steps to the railing, held it up and got a bunch of people to shout his name as he came back. He heard, looked up and waved a couple of times and as she returned to her seat she was just beaming. That was sweet.

So, I was annoyed at the people who wanted him to play because he was good 5 years ago in another country when we're fighting for a playoff bye. But if you just want an interaction with him that doesn't screw up the team's chances; I'm all for it.

We finally got to see our "optimum" front 6 and yet still had considerable issues creating chances and scoring outside of Villa. Herrera's play in the attacking third has been puzzling to me for a few games now. No question he makes major contributions bossing the midfield and breaking up attacks but we see far less runs into the box he did in early season games. Not sure if he's choosing to be more tentative or he's been instructed to but it's very hard to see what his role is supposed to be once the ball gets in and around the box on offense.

From a larger system perspective it feels at times like we don't have enough players in attack and too many players have been given defense first responsibilities. Our RBs are clearly instructed to be conservative in attack and be a 3rd CB most of the time. Ring now plays a full time deep back holding CDM role. Herrera and TMac when in midfield mostly float at the top of the box. Maxi is the only midfield player that regularly joins the attack but is often late due to how deep he drops for the build up. In the end it's often only Sweat, Wallace, Villa and Harrison trying to break down a team that has 5-6 players back defending.

Ring has excelled in his holding role so it makes sense to keep him there but if we do and we play a conservative RB the other two mids both have to be consistent contributors in attack.

Happy to see all the support for #SavetheCrew

I hate to nitpick but he proved his uselessness 25 matches ago.
True true true!!!

but for whatever reason PV ignored it, and this was the first chance Lewis got to play in the same game and play the same position that Khiry only previously sucked it up at - they literally were both right wings and the 5-10 minutes prior to Lewis coming on, Khiry looked like a headless chicken running around. It’s like a taste test with a plastic bottle well brand of scotch in the first glass and Macallans 18 in the second glass.
