Not sure if anyone caught Grant Wahl with Don Garber last week, but Garber hinted at another competition that will soon be launched within CONCACAF beyond the CCL

Don't know what else to refer to it as except a possible Europa or Sudamericana type competition

Why would it be called Europa?

Is there enough exposure and commercial viability for CCL to justify adding a second-tier CONCACAF league at this point? As far as I can tell, MLS fans don't really give a shit unless their team is in it. Perhaps the dynamic is different in other CONCACAF markets.

OTOH, if this signals a broader strategy to elevate pan-CONCACAF club competition, I'm a huge fan.

I think you just made the point for it. There is a lack of interest because so few teams compete each season. Doubling those numbers should in theory double the interest in it. It also give more teams in the middle of the table something to play for besides playoff seeding.

Isnt this about the tiered NT competitions FIFA is floating where there would be a CONCACAF NT "League" with Pro-Rel to largely replace friendlies and not a club competition? That seems more likely.

I don't believe so. I think this is primarily a Liga MX/MLS second tier competition

Both CAF and CONMEBOL have secondary club cups (which I’d never heard of) so this is probably the way of the future for the federations. I’d personally prefer a better US Open Cup and a secondary domestic cup for ease of travel and to help grow lower division clubs here before adding international matches to the schedule nightmare, but whatever.

Seems like a better cross-promotional move to partner with bigger players in other countries than to try and use the measly (by global comparison, or comparison to other sports) numbers of MLS clubs to boost lower division clubs. It also feels a little retro - see how the allure of the FA Cup has faded over time with the improved convenience of international travel.

I think if such a move has the effect of netting more exposure and money for MLS, eventually that should improve the visibility of the game in this country and would be a better shot for improving the livelihood of lower division clubs overall.

You mean the organization(s) that doesn’t run the competition?
Correct, I mean the organization(s) that don't run the competitions, but who are delegates from the organization that does run the competition to determine how clubs from their territory qualify.
