Crew Postmatch

I liked Okoli. Wasn't perfect, but physical, athletic and fairly intelligent.

We don't get at least one or maybe 2 of our goals if Herrera isn't in the match. I loved the work out of him.

Sweat was literally terrible except for like 3 plays.

Chanot was beast. Callens, why, man, why? You know I love you.

Too bad RJ made it on the pitch. Was hoping he was done.

Maxi is a really damn good player. I'll put it this way, if I knew PV were as good a coach as Maxi is a player, I'd feel good about our chances to end the year quite well.
I thought you liked PV?

Pretty savage win for us on the road tonight. I think we saw some of the nastiness that PV has been begging for.

Dare I say it, White made me sweat and Sweat turned me white all night. Going forward I was pleasantly surprised tho.

Okoli was OK but Villa would've scored or created a couple tonight. Got the sense that Crew defense was static and very porous.

Callens and Wallace seem ready for a rest. I would give Brillant another chance.

I think this was the first game that Maxi really ran the show tonight. Can he do it if Villa and / or Pirlo on the field? It feels like a matter of attitude or social ranking to me. He's such a subtle player that I think teams will have a hard time figuring him out. Deserved a goal tonight.

Herrera had a skittish spell as the 6 but was a total juggernaut as an 8. Didn't track Higuaín on the first goal, but was chasing down the ball like an 80th minute sub after a full game. I'm not sure if it was a coaching decision, but switching Herrera and Ring changed the complexion of the match. I can't remember much about how Ring fared as a 6, but things definitely improved. I still see Pirlo's place in our midfield but it appears we have an embarrassment of riches in the center of the park.

Nothing much to say about Harrison that hadn't already been said. This should probably he his last season in a blue shirt for his sake.

I'm really curious how this lineup may have fared against a team that pressed us. I wager not well. But it turned out to be a great choice on the road against a team like Columbus. Well done staff and team.

I like Okoli. Though the team can't play the same as if he's Villa. I'd love to see a TFC style 3-5-2 with Okoli and Villa playing off each other like Jozy & Gio.

Back to the game though. Ring played his usual game. Herrera played better as the game went on, which is a very good sign. I think it's safe to say that Maxi will go back deep whether Pirlo is in or not. He'll go where needed. Sweat reminded me of Saunders, making the routine look scary and using dramatics to make it look better than it was.

I posted earlier today that Pirlo would sit. It was humid. But the main reason is I think Herrera was going to get the start against Altlanta's speed anyway and Viera wanted him to get the reps in.

Some observations:

-Moralez's movement is just great - he is literally all over the pitch and seems to find pockets of space everywhere. He alternates between dropping back to help the defense, breaks between the lines. Fantastic assist to Harrison today. Starting to see why he was brought in as a DP.

-Yangel is the anti-Pirlo; his touches definitely need improvement but his mobility is much better. He's a more "MLS" type player and sometimes that is needed. As someone said there is no way Pirlo presses like Herrera did today for that third goal. Moving him up the field really disrupted CLB from playing out of the back.

-Chanot just might be this team's MVP. Another massive game from him...his passing is so impressive. Without Pirlo he took a more active role and he was the link from D to midfield.

-That third goal was a pure New Jersey goal - still can't believe it was scored by NYCFC.

Watching Pirlo play live was a bucket list item. I checked it off a while ago. I'm good.

I feel better that PV has the balls to sit him. I hope the balls stay free.

It took PV and Sweat two weeks to accomplish what PV and Wallace hadn't yet accomplished in a week, which is fine and positive. Sweat wasn't perfect but he and White helped the wings, which fixed a massive hole from last week.

We saw a different viable option with Okoli and Yangel being reasonable targets on the wing and wingback crosses which are normally wasted on Villa. Combine a bombing Yangel with Villa and we immediately have a new variety of options near goal.

As for Yangel, I love his unbridled snarl all over the field. He's going to wreck MLS even with some blips. Until he moves on to the bigger leagues.

Maxi is so smooth and plays with great awareness. He's so much fun to watch.

It's always great to see our traveling supporters having a blast. They looked better than the Crew supporters sounded.

I definitely think Rodney Wallace has slowed down massively. Isn't doing as much as before

If Wallace came into the year lacking fitness, he can get into game shape by playing, but he'll always be lacking a "base" that should have been developed during the preseason. Without a good base, any fitness he develops will deplete at a faster rate without planned rest periods.

I agree, Wallace needs to sit a game, or at least not start, so his legs get a rest. Camargo appears ready for a start, and I'd love to see Lewis get a go. Along the same lines, I wouldn't also mind seeing Callens get a 1game rest. Maybe for Callens, the Atlanta game isn't the best to rest, but managing the teams' legs is crucial for the guys that weren't here all preseason.

Agree there I think Wallace is very steady but he needs to be more dynamic and aggressive running at the back line. Plays well with mata overlapping but with no overlapping full back he doesn't create enough for himself just plays simple.

Also wonder why Lewis is in and out of the squad?

I think Wallace needs to be more dynamic and attack the back line he doesn't drive at defenders and doesn't shoot enough. Works hard but without an attacking wingback he struggles to create for himself.

Pretty sure Lewis came back from YNT duty and picked up an minor knock. And YNT duty can take a toll of a player's body with so many high intensity games close together. He's young, so always best to go slowly, don't break down their bodies or confidence. I expect we'll see a lot more of him second half of the season than the first.
