My hypothesis may not be correct, but if it is, it's not a crass "Fck David Villa he's being selfish" situation, it's a "this coach gave me an opportunity to come back to the team and I'm not gonna throw him under the bus because nothing good comes from it" situation.
Every player wants to play and none of them want to admit an injury is worse than it is. That's why in soccer there are players sometimes "beating" the concussion protocol and going back out. In college football there are players back on the field with a severely sprained ankle after 2 aspirin & taped up with five rolls of tape. I'm sure Villa has played through plenty of pain that normally needs real rest to heal, and maybe this was a time he thought he could play through it if it warmed up a bit and got loose. Who knows?!?!
Unless this is just a ruse to let him leave early in a justified manner like
Christopher Jee suggested, because the Spanish faithful wouldn't understand his love of NYCFC vs the bench for Spain, then I'm not going to hold my breath. If it isn't a ruse, then we all better buckle up for the wild ride off the cliff searching for goals.
