First time we mess with the lineup (following first match) and it doesn't work.
What do you make of this game?
To me it was clear from the get go that the team didn't have any fluidity.

Learning experience for Vieira?
Discuss.

This game was lost on the team sheet. Brilliant and Pirlo were absolutely awful.

For those defending Pirlo, today you saw the liability he is when we don't have 65% possession. The rest of this team is built on speed and athleticism. Defensively, he provides no cover. On the second goal, he wasn't even a speed bump and didn't try and stop the counter.

We have consistently played better this year without him on the pitch. I'm out on Pirlo. Never want to see him play again

I'm blaming this on Vieira.

- Changed what work: Our backline.
- Didn't change what didn't: Pirlo for TMac from the beginning.

Camargo was effective until that last shot of his. We must play better than this.

Hopefully PV learns from this one. Essentially went 3 at the back, keeping Ring from getting forward in favor of more offense from Mata. Not a trade I'd like to see them make again. We seemed too confined to the wings with no ability to play up the middle. People here kill shelton for kick and chase but it's all Mata does as well. The loyalty to TMac hurt as well, that seemed 100% like a planned sub regardless of it making sense or not. Disappointing all around was easily a winnable game.

I won't bother to do a full rating. Sean Johnson was terrific again. McNamara and Camargo were good off the bench. Shelton still lacks a first touch. Play him at RB already!

Villa was useless offensively. Did Maxi play today? Did he get off the bus? Ring was ok. Was better when Pirlo came off. Matarrita was exciting offensively. Harrison the same.

Pirlo and Brillant were miserable. The CBs were good today but not great. Didn't seem comfortable with the formation

My thoughts exactly.

You wanted TMAC for Pirlo in the starting line up? So essentially trading slow + no defense + world class movement+ world class passing for slow + no defense + slightly above average MLS level passing and movement?

Why do we play so many balls in the air to maxi? Makes no sense. We're highlighting his biggest weakness. If he has ups like mugsy bogues I could understand. But he never has a chance at any of those.

For $6 million a year, there are probably 50 players we could sign that can be Pirlo offensively, but also play on the defensive side of the ball.

It's great that he can pick out a pass, but so can Ring and Maxi for a fraction of Pirlo.

Worse signing than Lampard?

We had 65.9% per MLS stats

I think Sean Johnson could do more to stop blocking shots and sending them directly into the box. This has happened before and luckily our player to go them first to clear it. Push it out of bounds or catch it.

It's hard to assess any of the players in what was a massive system fail.

I don't know how Vieira thought it would be a good idea to nullify Harrison, Wallace and Ring in order to gain ... exactly what I don't know. The only thing I can think of was that Freddy wanted a game. Wallace was lost inside. Harrison spent most of the game in his own half. Ring was pinned. We had very little offensive width.

Just a really, really weird setup and one that the players were clearly uncomfortable with.

I'll have to post complete thoughts later in the week as I am travelling back to the missus on the metro but we lost this as soon as we changed the back line and selected Brillant (who was about as helpful as a training cone... quite literally for their first goal).

Also, RFK is a right dump. But our away support was brilliant.

Wow those were a pair of ugly goals to give up.
Who made the back pass on the first? I'm not excusing Brillant, but the pass back perfectly split Brillant and Chanot and shares the blame. I can't see who it is. My best guess is Matarrita.
