DC Postmatch

You wanted TMAC for Pirlo in the starting line up? So essentially trading slow + no defense + world class movement+ world class passing for slow + no defense + slightly above average MLS level passing and movement?

Man, get the entire **** outta here with this. I'm entirely baffled by the absolute disregard for what T-Mac brings to this team. HE'S BETTER THAN PIRLO RIGHT NOW. Pirlo has no goals and no assists in 394 minutes. Tommy has 1 goal and 1 assist in 100. He also outperformed Pirlo last season. Nobody can deny Pirlo's history but to ignore his present is just foolish. It's also disrespectful to a guy who gives absolutely everything he has for this club and DELIVERS.

Khiry is pointless to bring on if he isn't even going to kick it and try run past someone. He has no finesse or technicality. Why does he pretend? The whole league knows he's shit at this point.

He's also weak as shit. I saw him pushed off the ball at least 3 times where he absolutely should not have been. I wanted to root for him and see him grow but he doesn't seem to learn. He's in his 3rd season and actually seems to be regressing. I think he needs to be loaned out somewhere where he can get more playing time and hopefully that would help him improve a little. He's absolutely awful right now.

Also, this team is so much worse with Brillant on the field. He should be behind Ethan on the CB chart, and if we need him at all the rest of the season we're in big trouble. That was an awful, awful performance from him. Just way too many mistakes.

Agreed. Unfortunately, I'm sure he's going to see time in the May gauntlet and it's for sure going to cost us.

Villa was pissed at the state of the pitch, and to be fair it was pretty terrible. There were noticeable patches of dirt on the side closest to the tv cameras.

That pitch is always terrible. The club should have been well aware of that inevitability and been prepared for it. I specifically mentioned that we always have a hard time in DC so I had already prepared myself mentally for what I was about to witness and still left pissed off. I wasn't raving and ranting though so that was a small improvement.

If Pirlo isn't helping us defensively when it's tied or we're losing and we take Pirlo out when we're chasing the game, what's his role?

Exactly. At this point, it's to sell jerseys and tickets only.

I'm not going to argue about TMac being better than Pirlo or not, but TMac's defensive lapses on DC's second goal, and the lack of intensity or urgency to defend from somebody who had checked into the game shortly before, and who is fighting to get more playing time, is disappointing. I mean, you can guarantee that Rodney, Ring or Chanot would have chased Acosta around with a little bit more of conviction. Even Maxi. Personally, I would vote for Herrera to start if he can bring some more intensity, because DC created nothing and both of their goals were gifts from us pretty much.

Huh? He was closing down on the ball and it was deflected opposite him, which then fell to Brillant who again blew it.
Nope. He was marking Acosta, ran past him as Acosta passed the ball, and then completely forgot about Acosta while running to the endline. 1st rule of defending in soccer is never leave your man in the box. TMac was responsible for Acosta until the ball was won back.

I'll try to rewatch the play later.

Here's my plug for my post game quotes and analysis.

http://thenycfcnation.com/2017/04/f...by-example-and-tommy-mcnamara-makes-his-case/

Even if you don't read it, I want to bring attention to Sean Johnson who was been a leader on and off the pitch for this team. I hope he sticks around for a while because he's the best example of a guy who you'd want to share a locker room with. He will never blame anyone for a mistake, and every success is a team effort.

There were questions as to why they'd bring in a keeper who hasn't played with the ball at his feet for this team, but I think his personality and leadership abilities more than make up for any of that.

If you are gonna try and only blame Tommy for this goal you at least have to get your facts correct. On your first failed analysis of the play you completely made up the facts that: (1) Acosta fell down (2) so Tommy checked out of the play and (3) Acosta got up and ran into the box and scored while Tommy just stood there. None of that actually happened.

Now you say Tommy left Acosta alone in the box and ran aimlessly to the end line. First, unless you are a high school level team that man marks their opponents, there is no hard and fast rule that says a defender can't leave his man to double and close down the man with the ball, especially in a case like this where there were still two defenders in the box (Brilliant and Chanot) to deal with two attackers (LeToux and Acosta).

The other problem with your second attempt at analyzing this play is that when Acosta released the ball and Tommy left him to try and close down Sam, Acosta was still 10 yards outside of the top of the penalty area. So he didn't leave his man alone in the box. Regardless, my main point is that in your attempts to solely blame Tommy for this goal you are completely ignoring the fact that Brillant is the right back and is responsible for attackers in that area of the box. He should have peeled off LeToux (who was already covered by Chanot) and picked up Acosta when he made his secondary run into the box.

I for one agree with Midas' earlier statement on the topic. Brillant is the most culpable but Tommy (and also Pirlo) are guilty of less than stellar defending in this sequence. Johnson did his job and has a right to be pissed off at all three of them.

He's also been pretty solid with the ball at his feet. I find his positioning/decision making a little iffy, but I'm also not paying super close attention.

This is what I saw. Ulrich had me feeling like I was tripping so I'm trying to get a good look at the play again in the highlights.

Sean Johnson will be a Gold Cup call-up. Good for him. He's resurrected his career here.

And the fact that we are having this conversation about Pirlo proves, to me at least, that he's losing his grip on his job.

Having a great day, thanks. No need to be patronizing just because I disagree with you on this point. I actually enjoy the majority of your posts. You seem like an informed and passionate fan of the team. And if you actually read what I wrote, I'm not disagreeing with you that Tommy's defending could have been better. I just disagree with your contention that he is the only person responsible for the second goal. I think you're dead wrong about that. Anyway, cheers, and here's to claiming all three points against Philly this Friday.

Oh, oo-o-oh, come on, ooh, yeah
Well I tried to tell you so (yes, I did)
But I guess you didn't know, as I said the story goes
City, now I got the flow
'Cause I knew it from the start
City, when you broke my heart
That I had to come again, and show you that I'm real

All those times I said that I'll start for you
(You lied to me) Yes, I tried, yes, I tried
(You lied to me) Even though you know I'd die for you
(You lied to me) Yes, I cried, yes, I cried

It is
(Return of Eirik) Come on
(Return of Eirik) Oh my God
(You know that I'll be back) Here I am
(Return of Eirik) Once again
(Return of Eirik) Pump up the world
(Return of Eirik) Watch my flow
(You know that I'll be back) Here I go

So I'm back up in the game
Running things to keep my swing
Letting all the people know
That I'm back to run the show
'Cause what you did, you know, was wrong
And all the nasty things you've done
So, City, listen carefully
While I sing my come-back song

'Cause they said they'd never turn on me
(You lied to me) But you did, but you do
(You lied to me) All these pains you said I'd never feel
(You lied to me) But I do, but I do, do, do

Here it is
(Return of Eirik) Hold on
(Return of Eirik) Don't you know
(You know that I'll be back) Here I go
(Return of Eirik) Oh little girl
(Return of Eirik) Wants my pearl
(Return of Eirik) Up and down
(You know that I'll be back) Round and round

'Cause she said she'd never turn on me
(You lied to me) But you did, but you do
(You lied to me) All these pains you said I'd never feel
(You lied to me) But I do, but I do, do, do

It is
(Return of the Eirik) Come on
(Return of the Eirik) Oh my God
(You know that I'll be back) Here I am
(Return of the Eirik) Once again
(Return of the Eirik) Pump up the world
(Return of the Eirik) Watch my flow
(You know that I'll be back) Here I go

Don't you know

Can I put in for Vieira at fault for that goal? Both goals were perfect examples of players unsure of what to do in an unfamiliar system. 1st goal, chanot and brillant both thought the other would get that ball. There wouldnt be two guys there in a four in the back set, so that wouldn't be an issue.

2nd goal was worse. You had three CBs all bunched up, Brillant the RCB is on le toux, and Chanot was covering no one, Callens was no the ball carrier. Thank god we had 3 CBs since one had no one to cover.

This is not FIFA, you cannot just put people in unfamiliar positions and think they will know what to do under duress. Chanot and Callens have formed a good partnership over preseason and the first months of games, why would you mess with that? Not only did it fuck up the defense, it took one more body out of midfield on the build up making it harder to get the ball through.

Blaming anyone for this game other than Vieira is wrong in my opinion. And that is coming from someone who can usually find a way to blame Pirlo every game.
