[Debunked] Strange Rumor from Reddit: CFG Open to Buying Cosmos Brand?

It would still be a shame to see the Cosmos name retired to history.

What if MLS bought it and made a trophy for the Hudson River Derby called the Cosmos Cup? The Cup itself representing the complete history of professional and community soccer in NYC.

It gets passed to any New York metro area team that beats the current cupholder in an official match.

What if we did something like the Cascadia Cup?? It wouldn't be only NY, but we could add Philly, Boston, and/or DC??

There was some on r/MLS called the Nor'easter Cup between NYCFC, NJRB, Philadelphia, New England, and DC.

Eventually this will just be called the Eastern Division of the Eastern Conference, lol. Probably plus the Canadian teams.

If it's called the Cosmos Cup, it would have to be specific to New York. I like the idea of there being two MLS teams, a USL team or two, and some other lower NY metro area teams having a chance to hold the Cup. It would mostly pass between City and Metro, but every once in a while a USL team might nab it in a Open Cup game, and hold it until the next Open Cup. If City lost it, Metro fans would howl at us, and vice versa.

In fact, I like this so much that if/when the Cosmos go defunct again, I'll distribute the Cup to the last New York team that beat them, and start tracking it.

I'm sure the Cosmos Fans would nickname it, The Plastic Cup.

Actually, with four divisions you could have a meaningful playoff involving only division champions. A conference's divisional champs would meet eath other in a two-legged tie to advance to the MLS Cup final. And if the divisions had seven teams a piece, the season could be 33 games, as teams could play twice against division rivals (12 games) and once against each other team (21 games).

Of course I am dreaming. Actually, the current playoff format is the best one that the league has ever had, because the reward for the top two seeds is more substantial than it has been before. But still, the first-place team should be rewarded more than it is. (Not that I am eager to give the Red Bulls anything!)

In the current format there is not enough difference between finishing first and finishing second, the only difference being home field should those two seeds meet, and even that is diluted by the two-legged format. The first-place team should get something that no other team gets; in the current set-up, the ideal playoff system would be to have three qualifiers per conference, and to have the no. 3 seed play at the no. 2 seed, and the winner of that play at the no. 1 seed.

If we ever get to four divisions, and if they admit to the playoffs more teams than just the divisional champions (as they surely will), the advantage for each first-place team is going to be even less than it is today, which will be unfortunate.

I think a 28-team league would be run like this: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...lgQKd9RkID-oJl8tghD7ww9eSo/edit?usp=drive_web

The 34th game is a rivalry game. The playoffs are three rounds of two-leg matchups, with a single game final. No byes or reseeding, just like NBA playoffs.
