Andre Vilas-Boas was Mourinho's assistant for a while - hasn't done totally terribly.

Steve McClaren was Fergie's assistant and did brilliant things with England (English fans might disagree).

Carlos Queiroz has.... done some stuff.

My point is that a lot of the assistants underneath top managers end up getting gigs like OCG Nice.

“Why does the opposing team hit our players so much and the referee never calls a foul?
Why are penalties never called for us on fouls in the box?
Why does the opposing team just run at our players like a chicken with their heads cut off?”
Stewardess: excuse me sir, that’s not your seat. Please continue towards the back and you’ll see it on the left.
Domenec: my apologies. So first class is in the middle?
Stewardess: no. That’s coach.
Domenec: can somebody wake me before we land, I want a short nap?
Stewardess: the flight is 6hours.
Domenec: I don’t understand, how can it be so long? Wait, this can’t be right, the only seat in this row is the the middle..... and why is there a dog with the person next to me?

He should have learned all that already at the 2014 All-Star game.

ETA: my mistake - he joined MC in 2014 before Pep did? I see conflicting dates.

All in all, I think we probably upgraded from a tactics and coaching chops standpoint.

As others have pointed out, it will be interesting to see how the team responds, though.

Nonetheless, I expect we will see certain players' growth curves really ramp up. I also expect that we will see less of Tommy.

Unlike some portion of folks here (majority?), I don't think PV was that great at man management, and I've never thought our team seemed particularly close.

One thing you can be sure of is that Villa signed off on this hire, and he'll likely play where and when he wants from here out. I don't know if that in itself is good or bad. If it means Berget is mostly a sub, and we start with Villa plus two of three from Lewis, Isi and Medina in the front three, then it's 100% awesome IMO.

I also believe we'll see an improved ability to score through sustained possession. We hardly have ever done that. But now that I think about it, who really does anymore? So maybe it's not that important in today's game, but it would surely be a positive to have that in our locker.

Torrent's employer as of yesterday, for one.

In MLS, NYCFC and SKC are toward the top of the league for both possession and scoring, but I agree that there's been a disconnect between how we retain the ball and how we create chances. If anybody knows how to fix that, it should be a dude who's apprenticed under Pep for the last decade.

This is a good point and surprisingly little discussed here. I have certainly noted that we prioritize possession but tend to score when moving the ball quickly rather than when sustaining possession in the other team's half. It will be interesting to see what changes with new management, and if that's one of them.

Since you’ve now endorsed him, I hope he plays Sweat and Berget just to wind you up.
