I can hear his bones creaking through the picture

***He's only two years older then me, maybe those are my bones :( ***

Does he play more or less than the 244 min Pablo Alvarez played for nycfc?

I don’t think he’s an Alvarez (brought in as a favor to Villa). He’s more of a Struna/Iraola mold. Spanish Veteran with maybe a season (or less) left in those legs to fill a gap in our roster till the next transfer window.

I appreciate the optimism but other than being spanish Iraola and Amagat carreer are no where near similar pedigree:

Iraola: Captain of Athletic Bilbao, 22 appearances the year prior to joining NYCFC, 406 career appearances for Bilbao, 9 national team appearances, and 2 champions league appearances.
Eloi Amagat: 15 min total of Spanish first division play last season all other experience in lower leagues, zero national team appearances.

People forgot how accomplished Iraola was when he came it's amazing how little money it took to get him.

Sorry to lower expectations but Alverez was a career Spanish second division player just like Eloi so career wise he's our closest comp. Maybe Eloi's here to be Dome's Friend.

Not me. I’m an Iraola fan for life. He was one of the few bright spots of the first two years. The man did a job when there was no talent around him.

I honestly have no clue who this punter is. Don’t really care. Pretty sure it means we’re in trouble if he’s playin.

I've tried doing this survey on Twitter and reddit but maybe it'll get more substantive responses here: If you disliked Amagat, why? What parts of his game did you think were lacking?

I don't really have a strong opinion about the guy but the amount of hate he got is fascinating. Trying to understand what exactly set people off about him.

Opportunity cost of the $250K paid to him.

That's one question.
Trying to understand what exactly set people off about him.
That's a completely different question. And you know the answer to this.
  1. nobody ever heard of him before
  2. the first things we learned were that he was a career second division player who worked with Torrent at some point, whose team was finally promoted to first division last season, upon which he refused a transfer to a team back to second division, because he would rather play 2-3 games all season in La Liga with his hometown team than play regularly -- which in fact happened, and is something of a nice story and all -- but signals he's not very good and he's rusty and he has more loyalty than talent and is probably only here because he knows Dome
  3. with that background he better prove himself fast or people will turn against him
  4. instead in his first game -- a derby -- he lets Royer out-hustle him to a ball on which Amagat had position, leading directly to a BWP goal, followed by a red card 3 minutes later, at which point his fate was probably sealed, barring clear and obvious stellar play and good results, but instead
  5. the team earned only 9 points in the 8 games he played
With all that, asking for neutral, analytic assessment of his play to unlock the mystery of why people don't like him is rather missing the point. Might not be fair but that's what set people off.
