Eloi Amagat [Midfielder]

I'm on record having somewhat defended Amagat since the beginning, and I think has was an almost fanatical, single-minded forward-passer compared to Ofori, who was the only like-for-like in the roster if we are to assume that Dome, for whatever reason, didn't want to play the 18 y.o. Sands. Of course I think Sands should have gotten lots or all of the minutes that Amagat took. I think that's not a debate on this board. But with Ofori I see a wash at best. Yes, it was concerning that Amagat didn't realize how much athleticism he's lost and would launch into superhero tackles that would look bad, but he had many qualities IMHO.

Also, what's the beef with the Spanish 2nd division? I am absolutely convinced that many many players in the roster of contender teams in the Spanish 2nd division (or in the roster of bottom-feeders currently in La Liga, which is the same) would be excellent in MLS. Much better than the average for sure. I mean, we've moved on from the TMacs and Grabavoys and Mikey Lopez of the world but we are very far from being clearly superior to the Spanish 2nd division, me thinks. So I don't think Amagat's curriculum was a problem, his age could be, and that became clear after the 1st game.
Alex Callens came from the Spanish second division and that's turned out quite well.
I think the Spanish, German, and Italian 2nd division could give us decent players, as it has given us Callens, Ring, and Ofori to name but a few. Ring and Callens have been excellent, Ofori and Amagat have been serviceable. Not world moving players, but mid to upper tier in terms of footballing ability. I see nothing wrong with continuing to look there for decent players that we don't have to dig incredibly deep in our pockets for. Better than top divisions of lesser footballing countries (club-wise) like Belgium or Sweden.

I'd like to point out that Ring has progressed tremendously since his move from the 2nd Bundesliga. He was nowhere near as good at Kaiserslautern as he is now. I suppose this is very much down to Patrick Vieira making him a better player very quickly, and it is something that Ring has pointed out himself, too.

Getting players from those leagues isn't the problem it's getting 30+ cones because they have a relationship with the coach that is.

Hmm. Are you saying that we would have won MLS Cup if we didn't play Amagat?

Hmm. Maybe I would have wrote that instead if that's what I meant?
I'm not trying to antagonize you or put words in your mouth. I'm trying to figure out what you mean when you say "getting 30+ cones because they have a relationship with the coach" is the problem, by putting what you said in my own words.

So if it's not about winning the cup, what is it about? Is that the problem in and of itself, or is it the cause of another thing that is the problem, from your perspective?

The problem here is that we unfortunately do not have a team of Alex Rings. However, I think that...
WE ALL DREAM OF A TEAM OF ALEX RINGS
A TEAM OF ALEX RINGS
A TEAM OF ALEX RINGS
WE ALL DREAM OF A TEAM OF ALEX RINGS
A TEAM OF ALEX RINGS
A TEAM OF ALEX RINGS
AND NUMBER 1, IS ALEX RING!
AND NUMBER 2, IS ALEX RING!
AND NUMBER 3, IS ALEX RING!
AND NUMBER 4, IS ALEX RING!
AND NUMBER 5, IS ALEX RING!

I'm saying getting younger players that can improve and physically keep up in a league that is pretty physical is preferable to spending 300k on Amagat types. Would we have signed Amagat if he didn't have ties to Girona? Interpretating what I said to "we would have won the cup if we didn't play Amagat" is a reach that seemed pretty damn condescending.

That makes sense to me.

TBH, I was not trying to be condescending, but can definitely see how it would have come off that way. I actually typed and erased things because I thought they were more condescending, if that's any consolation :/
