Expansion Rumors Megathread

What could possibly be causing Beckham so much trouble? I'm sure he knows enough influential people who would be more than happy to help him quickly get the stadium deal done.

He wants cheap/free land, like every other sports owner. However unlike most cities no one in Miami is interested. Too much fall out from recent other sport stadium in the area.

This only works if he buys the land from private owners.

Doesn't he or one of his rich buddies have enough money to easily do this and still fund the team?

The issue is where. They want the Arena in downtown Miami which is unique all in its own. The waterfront property is too expensive and has for the most part been developed. once you get further inland towards I-95 there is more crime etc. Not as desirable, plus there might be a big enough plot. If you need to get rid of a street you will meet opposition with the city unless you line the right pockets. The city is pushing for it to be else where like next to Marlin park where they can share it with the University of Miami.

Biggest issue with miami is the politics is that of a banana republic. Everyone has there hand out and you need to grease the polititions up etc if you want to get something done.

Looks like Beckham wasn't lying, he'll have something to announce shortly....

Ronaldo to MLS in 2018...which is also the projected date for Miami to join MLS? Hmmm....

Pretty bummed as a Northern Californian. Sac Republic absolutely blew up over the last year and a half and really showed that NorCal cares about soccer. They'll be in MLS, but I'm not really sure why something proven is losing out to something literally nonexistent (Miami). I guess the same could be said about NYCFC haha

Oh yeah? WELLLL Sacramento has...uh...a river! And...um...a riverboat that doesn't actually function? Sounds pretty awesome, eh Messi???

NYCFC, LAFC, Galaxy and Miami will be the swinging dicks of the jungle when it comes to DPs.

Star Wars

It was written in Beckham's original mls contract that he can buy a new franchise at a discounted rate. Or something like that. So this has been the plan for 7+ years while Sac is new on the scene. They'll just have to wait a little longer

Actually Beckham already exercised his MLS franchise rights, Miami already has "their franchise". But MLS won't let them into the league until a stadium deal is done.

You would think with Sacramento's comments today, that deal must be close to being done. Otherwise, why tell Sacramento to hit the road (for now)?

Yeah a stadium must be in the works for miami. It better not be a temp one at FIU.

Mods : Just a suggestion, maybe we can have one thread on all expansion news ?

I'm okay with FIU as temp as long as there are perm plans for their own stadium. We don't want another homeless team running around. ;)

An anonymous source said the group thought just that. That Beckham would show up to city hall, say, "Hi, I'm David Beckham, I want to build a stadium in Miami." and it'd be done.

They really underestimated how little the Miami politicians cared who he was.

They should really let Miami play at new Dolphins stadium until they can build their own stadium:

If they get a stadium deal to build a new one, they very well might be playing at SunLife. However. I think FIU might be a better temp venue.

You're right but maybe at least for the first game, play it at that stunning stadium, fill the bowl, blow everyone away here and abroad.

Wasn't FIU where the Fusion played? Has that stench on it, plus, I don't think it really gives off the vibe Beckham is looking for. Dolphins stadium would definitely be more inline with that message.

Fusion played in Lockhart in Ft Lauderdale, where NASL Strikers play now.
