Couldn't agree more. I know some of the MLS 1.0 names were a little corny, but the best names in MLS 3.0 are the original ones - Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps, Impact, Galaxy, Fire, Crew.

man here i wanted san antonio to get a spot ( stadium, fanbase since the scorpion NASL years, now expanding their academy, serious owners) but its looking less and less likely they will get a spot

Yeah I think San Antonio is all the way down to a #31/32 candidate now. MLS will probably blow right through 28 to 30, assuming they have a surplus of strong completed bids.

i get Sacramento (good fans) , i dont want san diego but with donovan involved its almost a guarantee they get it.
but why Phoenix over San antonio? especailly since MLS LOVES this whole close city rivalries and can probably go next year.
in the east im cool with Tampa.....then toss up between North Carolina/ cinncinatti.....though apprantly nashville is starting to gain big momentum
Because Phoenix is 12th in TV market rankings at 1.89 million households and San Antonio is 31st with 939k.
By the way, Tampa is 11th and Detroit is 13th. I go back and forth between whether a Miami admission hurts Tampa's bid or not, but it is undeniably the largest untapped TV market, and larger than both Orlando and Miami. If we let TV market size be our guide:
24 - Miami (16th)
25 - Sacramento (20th)
26 - St. Louis (21st)
27 - San Diego (28th)
28 - Tampa (11th)
29 - Phoenix (12th)
30 - Detroit (13th)
Cleveland, Charlotte, Raleigh, Baltimore, and Indy are the only markets bigger than San Diego that wouldn't be in yet, but only by 400k in Cleveland's case and 200k or less for all the others. Nashville is right behind at 29th, and Cincinnati's at 36th.

i dont think TV is the main factor or at least should not be...i mean you still have Columbus and its small market (smaller than San Antonio) .....and i mean look at the revolution they have that whole area and one one gives a fuck....and is not drawing so much that they are on prime time
as for Detroit who is leading that bid? no way detroit city FC goes MLS...maybe NASL if that ( although technically they are not in detroit city itself)
tampa has the following...miami can be the biggest mistake if they force it.....people go for their international teams not a local one in soccer....i mean look at marlins....only dolphins seems to be followed ......i think the U may have more of a following
I know MLS wants teams on the west coast, but for travel reasons the Middle of the country makes the most sense for some slots, not just from a travel perspective, but for TV slots.
Detroit has Tom Gores and Dan Gilbert, the owners of the Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers. Extremely deep pockets and they have a lot of goodwill in the city. They choose a difficult stadium site that they are working on obtaining, but if they get it, they will immediately be considered a favorite.
I agree that TV market size is far from dispositive, but it's a pretty major factor.

Yup. As far as I know, the city would rather just finish the jail, but are also willing to listen to offers. So it's on Gilbert and Gores to put up or shut up.
Build the stadium over the prison? Think of the cool names for the venue:

The Penal Colony
Can also lead to some interesting kit ideas. How about dark grey and white stripes as the primary, and traffic cone orange jumpsuits as the secondary?
