France vs. Croatia
Les Bleus vs. Vatreni

I called this from the beginning, back in March I said "France is gonna win the world cup" and meanwhile the rest of the world was ranting and raving about Belgium, Germany, and Brazil. And deep down I knew it would be France. Just one more game to prove me right! :D

I'm torn on England -Croatia. I like England (been there several times though I have no legit connections) Just like football and their culture (Rock music/movies etc) but as a France fan first and foremost (besides USA of course) it will be awkward for me having England in the final and not pulling for them (As I would against 90 percent of opponents )

France are heavy favorites. On most levels I agree with this. I think their more talented and deeper on paper and I also think they are more talented and deeper than anyone Croatia has played in the tournament so far. They also have a day more rest and have not played any extra time. Still Croatia are resilient and some might say "Fate" could be on their sie if you believe in such things.

Can you explain what these numbers mean?

If you wager $102 on France you win $100 (plus your original wager of $102).

If you wager $100 on Croatia you win $375 (plus your original $100 you risked).

If you wager $100 on a Draw result you win $230 (plus your original $100 you risked).

If you wager on either France or Croatia to win and the match ends in a draw in regulation, you lose.

Positive numbers you bet 100 to make that number, negative numbers is what you gotta risk to make $100
If you win you get your number plus your bet back. If you lose then its all gone.
The numbers are usually quoted in hundreds, but you can bet tens of dollars to millions on these ratios.

France you gotta lay $102 to make $100
Croatia you gotta lay $100 to make $375
Draw you gotta lay $100 to make $230

This is a three way bet. Betting sites allow for draws in 90 minutes. You can also get money lines for outright wins, which last i saw it was like -240 France +180 Croatia. Means France is roughly even money to win in 90, favorite to win any which way (normal time, ET, penalty kicks).

The idea of money lines is they change to reflect expected odds. In a normal friendly bet you say to your buddy, hey $100 france wins and your buddy accepts. His win is funded by you lose completely. In the real world people bet heavily on favorites so if a bookie was like your friend and accepted any even money bet that came his way he'd have a million france bets and few croatia bets. He (likely) doesn't know any more then you, so he doesn't have million dollar conviction that croatia will win. He's not looking to take a risk like that. He just wants to be in the middle and collect a fee for finding the other side.

So to even the betting sides he skews the moneylines. Now you gotta bet 240 to only win 100 if you bet france. On the other side you only gotta bet 100 to win 180. if you notice in this setup he doesn't care the outcome of the game. If he only took two bets 1 for France and 1 for Croatia and france wins, he takes the $100 the croatia guy bet and gives it to the french guy. $100 in, $100 out. And if croatia wins, he takes the $240 the french guy bets and pays out Croatia $180. $240 in, $180 out, and a $60 he gets to keep.

If he opens his books at france -240, croatia +180 and 5 people bet france for every 1 bet croatia he's got a problem. His odds are off. "smart money" think france is heavily favored more then the money line reflects, so the bookie needs to adjust his numbers to france -350, Croatia +300, then he either scares off france betters not willing to risk 350 only to make 100, or entices more croatia betters to come on board evening his book out. (hypothetical numbers here, idk what ratio fixes 5:1 betting and such)

Now you have learned the basics of making and betting moneylines. Careful you dont get hooked.

wow, thanks for the explanation. I don't plan on betting any time soon, but I see and understand this. My dad talks about similar things, but not in regards to betting. I appreciate it!

You swamped that dude. But for real, I’m proud of you and proud that someone else here obviously does sports gambling.

Much like my line of work, I’ve given up on educating people for free. But I appreciate those who aren’t yet so calloused.

He (the local bookie) isn’t setting the #’s anyway.

He’s likely just moving the number wherever Pinnacle, Bookmaker etc move the # to.

Sometimes books want very little exposure on games.

But if you see the #2 ranked college basketball team is +1.5 against the #18 ranked team in the nation, the books are ready to gamble it up with the public*

*Hint to those that are just getting their feet wet in sports betting: Take the #18 team -1.5 in those spots.

And never ever call it “sports gambling”.

It’s sports betting.

Gambling is what black jack and slot players do.
