This why former players may not be the best choice to plug/play into clubs’ business positions. Contract lengths and pink slips are pretty important and that many former coaches on the payroll is ridiculous.

I agree, different league entirely but this has been played out over and over in the NBA, there are a small handful of outlier situations where former players that have turned themselves in good general managers but in general it works our poorly. Being a former player may help with talent evaluation but it does nothing to prepare you for negotiations, understanding cap mechanics or even just knowing how to run a large scale operations and manage multiple staff. Most of the better NBA teams have moved away from hiring former players to lead the organization.

I'd suspect this is only more true in the MLS as it seems to have by far the most complicated cap mechanics of any of the major professional leagues. Ideally Reyna has the support he needs to fill the gaps but I always worry about it.

Paul Tenorio writes for The Athletic about how LAG are a whisker away from entering the 2019 season with four DPs, in violation of current MLS roster rules, unless/until MLS reverts to their time-honored tradition of making up new rules so the Galaxy can do what they want.

My discussions with several general managers around the league made this much clear: There is no way for the Galaxy to restructure Giovani dos Santos’ deal to remove his DP status without either: 1. Dos Santos giving up guaranteed money; 2. LA paying him off the books or; 3. Forcing MLS to change its rules.

The first option is pretty much unthinkable. Players rarely if ever forego money that is contractually owed to them.

The second would be tantamount to an MLS endorsement of backdoor deals, a ludicrous proposition.

The third would be consistent with the way MLS has treated the Galaxy for over a decade—allowing them to bend and remake the rules to gain a competitive advantage—and it would anger every other team in the league.

Why not just say, look, you can have 4 DP's, but your barred from making transfers until one goes?

Editted: signings, not transfers.

While a signing ban is a decent idea, you're still left with the possibility that other teams would object that, hey, they too would be willing to ride out a short-term transfer ban in order to field four DPs for as long as they felt it was advantageous, but they have no opportunity to do that this close to the end of the rostering period.

Anything which allows LAG to proceed with four DPs on the books has this same inherent problem: a short-term competitive advantage to LAG (your opinion of GDS notwithstanding) not offered to the other teams in the league.

I think the way this could end is MLS buying out GDS's contract and releasing him and then (possibly) fining or otherwise punishing LAG financially (or appearing to).

apparently gio had been given option to decline buy out or something like that ( based on galaxy reddit people and atheltic article mentioned this i think) i dont know where technicalities stand between Galaxy or MLS doing it since contracts are technically under MLS.

I hear you, but it's the same punishment many teams get for FFP violation or other sorts of violations in europe. Fine LAG a shit-ton of money (maybe the price of the DP contract such that they end up paying double for the player) and then impose a ban.

Fck LAG. If they have four DPs on the team, they should be banned from playing the newest/4th which is their talisman Ibra, and also their CAP should take the hit with zero relief. This is on them for not abiding by the rules. Bet they’ll figure out a solution really quick if Ibra can’t play.
