Galaxy Postmatch

Just spitballin', but how about a flat 3-4-3?

Wallace, Villa, Harrison
Sweat, Maxi, Herrera, Allen?
Callens, Brillant, White

Could put Lewis in at LW, slide Wallace back to LWB, and Sweat to the bench.
The one issue with this is White is also suspended, so you'd have to move Sweat back to LCB, Callens to the middle, and Brillant to RCB. I just don't want Brillant going full 90 at RCB. I don't mind it when we're chasing a goal, just not for a whole match. But if we were to go with that, then slot Lewis at LW and Wallace at LWB as you suggested.

As others have mentioned as well, I wouldn't mind seeing Harrison start on the bench for this one to give him some rest.

Forgot about White. Definitely not the game to move to a 3-man backline.

Despite our "hold the ball" narrative, this was our 4th game in a row where we've had the lesser of possession. Prior to this stretch we'd only lost the possession battle twice all year.

Our six under 50% possession matches have a combined record of 5 wins 1 loss. In terms of personnel, 5 of them featured Ring and Herrera, 1 only Ring. Maxi missed 2 out of 6.

The 3 wins with less possession have required wundergols and an amazing GK, a hat trick from nothing out of Villa, and a herculean effort downa man vs chicago. And its not like our plan has been to give up possession. We are getting beat at our own game. Maybe team is tired? Too bad we have no capable subs.

damn, I was hoping all 5 choices would be Sean Johnson

edit: and that's the one they picked? interesting...

I know, that's not even his best one. I think the one straight on goal where the LA attacker was a yard outside the box and he got a hand to it was the best one.

Yeah, wut? Was that one even counted as a save? He only officially had five saves, and at least four of them were better. I'm not sure that one was even on goal.

I still want to give Jack's legs a rest to prevent chronic dead legs, but if he's gonna play, put him in Maxi's spot with Lewis at his wing/Wallace at the other. The alternative is to let Jack/Wallace play their normal spots and have Lewis take Ring's (with Maxi/Lewis both playing advanced of Hererra). Great dribbler and pace to lend a hand on defense, but having two squirrelly guys in Maxi/Lewis playing speed/dribbling through the middle could be a nightmare for NE's DMid to defend. I would expect a lot of through balls to one of them as Villa clears out the CB with a run to the side.

To be fair, the sub issue is largely because of how many first-choice starters have been unavailable. Wallace, Maxi, Matarrita, Herrera have all missed large amounts of time due to injury/international duty, plus we've had each of our midfielders miss games for suspension. Pretty remarkable this team is where it is despite all the things that haven't gone our way this year.

I think a lot of it has to do with Maxi being absent, but also a lot has to do with Brillant replacing Chanot. SJ does not trust Brillant to initiate play from the back line, and rightly so. He does give the ball to Callens to link with the midfield, but when he's under pressure we have seen SJ more and more to prefer the long balls from a goal kick. That takes away a lot of possession.

Isn't there a website that tracks passing partners in the box score? I remember seeing it before, but it's not a website I used regularly.

There is that one graphic that Doyle uses in his bits that displays this. I'm not certain where he gets it from though.

I don't think Harrison is tired. He is just getting more defensive attention. No need to sit him down. He's going to have 11 days off at month's end anyway.

I can't fathom why they picked that one. He had probably the best game a goalkeeper has had in MLS this season, and they literally pick the least impressive save for the voting.

Since we don't have a NE game thread yet, it's worth pointing out that we only have two CBs for this next game, Callens and Brillant. Chanot is still hurt and White is out for Yellow Card Accumulation. Sands, who might have been a choice, is also hurt.

So, who plays there if one of our starters is out?

Mikey Lopez

Ben Sweat is our emergency CB. Alex Ring would have been next. I assume Herrera would be the fourth choice for Sunday.
