Folks, the 1st installment of the Wallace LB experiment was a failure, so much so that PV gave Sweat his debut against a wing-happy team. If Wallace isn't playing at LW, his spot on the field is wasted. Either go 3 in the back or play a real outside defender there in RJ or Sweat.

Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan won't want RJ, so then it's 3 or Sweat. Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan probably won't want Sweat either, so we're going to see 3 at the back. Anything else, and PV is simply rolling the dice, but in true PV form, he'll probably say Sweat played fine last game and start him.

While I see what you're saying re: Wallace, he still could turn in a decent performance at LB.

Let's put it this way, he played there after 2 days of training at the position. And it was one game, and one game may not be fully reflective.

I have actually yet to watch the last game, but I've heard a lot of people on here say that Callens was not that great. Should we use this one game as a barometer and say he shouldn't start there again?

I know I'm using somewhat of a hyperbole here, but just because Wallace had a terrible game at LB for us before, doesn't mean that would happen every time, we also don't see what's happening in training. So, you very well may be right that PV sees Wallace in training at LB and doesn't want that again.

I'll also add to that, those saying never play Pirlo again. I know we had a great result (and again, I'll caveat that I have yet to watch the last game), but that doesn't mean that there aren't matchups from certain teams where he provides us quite a lot.

PV could have had Wallace train for a week at LB in prep for Columbus, and maybe he did (which would be even more damning), and yet he went with Sweat. To me, that says PV has already thought about the subject.

We may not jettison Pirlo for Hererra (when he's not away on NT duty) but I guarantee you we would never have scored that pressing goal to win the game. Never. I said it during the shoutbox and again in the after game thread, but Pirlo couldn't have made the play (nor possibly Ring whom had switched with Herrera). And as you said, it's only one game, but Herrera showed he can put a header on frame and can cover ground for the press - that was telling.

Agree with what you say here, especially on the last parts about Herrera vs Pirlo. I just think there has been a ton of overreaction on here, generally, and we like to make snap judgments based on a limited dataset (but I guess, then again, what are forums for).

Its going to be interesting to see how Atlanta lines up. I think we are either going to see Almiron or Peterson on the wing without Asad.

I am concerned about our fullbacks. Sweat and White both made some nice plays but mainly had to make those plays because they were out of position. If the game against Columbus was 20 minutes longer, I feel we would have lost after Mannah and Hansen subbed in.

Pirlo is going to start and I hope PV finds a way to deal with the press in the first half. IDK this has the feeling of a trap game. Hopefully, Villa got some rest.

Surely they won't move Almiron, but managers are crazy, so who knows. Maybe they move someone up to the 10 and slot in Larentowitz? I think that would help us. Anything to limit Almiron's touches where he has the whole field as an option. Much rather see him stuck out wide.

I think you're right that Pirlo will start. Yet another reason why I would be happy for Almiron to move wide. He will abuse Pirlo by dominating him physically. Of course, Gressel/larentowitz/etc. could do the same. They just won't be as dangerous when they take the ball and run at goal.

Really wish we would move to a 3 CB system permanently with Jack and Maxi just behind Villa. It's too bad we don't have any other competitions where we could try Khiry as a RWB.

Tata has played Almiron there this season. I think our fullbacks are a bigger issue on the short field than Pirlo. Can you imagine Ethan White guarding him 1v1 all game? At least Pirlo has callens and chanot behind him.

Just had the chance to watch the Crew match last night.

For ATL, would still like to have the 4-3-3 and still want to see only 1 switch with RJ at left back. Although Sweat was not horrible. Still want to see Pirlo but not terrible if Herrera gets the start.

Camargo is out of shape.

Maybe you're only pasting the info you find, but I have a feeling you keep up with this stuff, so can you give weekly commentary on the ref's tendencies, and if he's been good/bad for us in the past?

I know he has and I think it's a real possibility again here. I guess I'm thinking that if he's wide, he'll be working in less space at least. If white can just stand in between him and the box, that's a win.

We definitely want to force people to send in crosses. We bat those away, no problem. /s

Getting to Yankee Stadium: Planned Street Closures

With less than a week to go until NYCFC take on Atlanta United FC at Yankee Stadium this Sunday, May 7th at 4:00pm ET, we put together a list of street closures following the 5 Boro Bike Race happening on the same day.

The 5 Boro Bike Race will be taking place throughout the NYC area prompting streets to be closed from 7:30am - 5:00pm and be opened up as the race goes.

Click here to search the exact routes via the NYC traffic map for Sunday.
Click here to view the route map of the race.

https://www.nycfc.com/post/2017/05/03/getting-yankee-stadium-planned-street-closures

Looking at the race map, it seems that the street closures will be a bit south of Yankee Stadium, so it should be okay for those of us driving in from the north (which should be the large majority of those driving in at all).

I was listening to the NYCFC Nation podcast earlier today and they had an Atlanta guy on there (from Dirty South Soccer I wanna say?). Based on the discussion this guy brought, we're doomed to lose about 6-0.

He basically said their defense is great, and their offense is a juggernaut, and the narrow field will work to their advantage, and NYCFC can't handle the press, etc. etc. etc.

I do think this will be a tough match, and do think they are a very talented team that will be competing in the playoffs this year, but honestly, after listening to this guy spew out how amazingly fantastic ATL were, I thought they had to have lost maybe one match. I didn't think he could possibly be talking about a team that has taken 5 points in its last 5 matches.

I really do enjoy it when podcasts of my sports teams bring in local guys from upcoming opponents, but damn this was a bit much.
