3 Forwards plus Zardes. That's what Arena wants. I didn't pick the damn roster

With Costa Rica having no warm up game before the Gold Cup, Wallace and Matarrita should be available.
I was wondering about this. I'd rather have them just because I want to watch our best players play, but I'm sort of ambivalent I suppose because, if they are gone, it means Calvo is gone too which would make Minnesota's backline presumably even worse than it already is.

Edited your post - hopefully your guess about Mata & Wallace is correct.

And Venegas. So half of their backline would be missing. Lol. Still...

NYCFC 2nd Tier Attack > Minnesota 1st Tier Backline > Minnesota 2nd Tier Backline

Right, forgot about Venegas, thought the one on Costa Rica plays attacking-mid/upfront and hasn't been a consistent starter lately.

In any event, I agree with your point that we should be able to score multiple goals against Minnesota no matter who is playing for them!

This game has Pirlo written all over it.

And Jon Lewis aka Jason Richards
Not sure if we ever see Pirlo again, I believe they are trying to passive-aggressively convince him to retire, but if we do see him, it'd be interesting to have him play advanced of Hererra and Ring in sort of a Valderrama-style position where he's charged with making the final pass instead of linking the D with the M/F positions.

And a Lewis/Villa/Harrison track meet could be fun to watch.

I think he starts. He did play that more advanced position at times last season, and did reasonably well. Still, I think he sits back next to Ring, while Herrera stays forward. Yangel has done well in that role.

This is interesting. I hadn't thought about it at all. Jamaica and Panama also don't have warmups, so it seems that Johnson might be the only guy missing this week.

Since Pirlo has surfaced in this thread....

I was watching the subs warm up at the end of the pitch at RBA on Saturday and there was a point where Pirlo and Mikey were watching the match and appeared to be talking. I had to wonder if Pirlo's internal monologue was something like "it never would have occurred to me that I would finish my career as a sub in an MLS match standing next to Mikey Lopez."

If so, it then could have evolved to "...and then Mikey would go on and I would be an unused sub..."

All great players come to the end and are surpassed by guys who couldn't hold a candle to them in their primes. But somehow the Mikey-Pirlo dichotomy was particularly striking.

In any event, if Wallace and Mata are not around on Thursday, this does feel like a "If he is every going to play..." match. Wouldn't be my preference though because the team is rolling now stylistically and, for better or worse he bends the shape of the game to his talents and shortcomings more than any player.

Secondary transfer window opens on July 10th. This is the last home game we have until then. So if NYCFC and Pirlo can agree to his retirement now, Thursday would be a sendoff game. Play him 60' regardless of the scoreline, let him get a standing ovation, and then a press release a day or two after the game announcing his retirement.

Then a few days later we announce...

SAMI KHEDIRA (or Fernando Torres). That's right, it's still going to happens guys!

But more likely Fuchs, probably. Who knows? Or the CFG brain trust have another Maxi in their back pocket.

If the club and Pirlo can agree to a midseason split -- which I still doubt -- then they will promote the living #$%^ out of that last game. I see no way they announce it ex-post unless the agreement comes after the fact.. There's a few more home games before the transfer window closes which is probably the actual deadline, though I realize cutting it too close makes signing someone new that much harder.

Though it can be quite possible that the team has had discussions with someone, understanding that Pirlo is going to retire and that the wheels are already in motion.

Not saying that's whats happening here, but it certainly is plausible.

I totally think it's possible. Unlikely but not unthinkable.

Welcome back Chris.

I still think Pirlo can play when a) motivated and b) surrounded by a team built around him

Problem is that he's not good enough in MLS to have a team built around him.

Woooo! Started my new job so I'll be back on the forums during the day.
I'd have figured it'd be the other way around.... more time on Forums when unemployed and less when you are at the office???

I actively don't adhere to that line of thought for myself....

No way. Minnesota is not the disaster they were in the early weeks. We can't piss away points trying to be clever. It's no secret that I was off the Pirlo wagon a long time ago. I'm totally OK with his final appearance being a late farewell run out. He's a legend and nothing will ever take away from that.
