I somehow think that we’re all going to be muttering to ourselves “another year where we blew it in the first leg.” I really hope they prove us wrong.

I think having the first leg at home is better for higher scoring teams. It creates that mountain for the opponent to climb. We’re a streaky team, so having 3matches in 8 days is maybe a good thing.

The players just need to maintain that level of energy for the full 90+5

My pessimistic prediction says we go up two or three goals, then giveaway a weak lazy goal late, and it's that goal that costs us in Atlanta

I can't think of a second game score in which we're better off with the draw. Am I missing something? The lead is clearly better, even with the ATL away goal.

There really isn’t that much difference between those scores and what you need in the second leg.

With a 0-0 draw, you need to at least draw and score a goal in ATL to move on.

With a 2-1 win, you either need to draw (any score) or lose 3-2 or any other one goal loss scoring at least 2 goals in ATL. So a 2-1 win is marginally better in terms of giving more options to move on.

Needless to say, I think there has only been one 0-0 draw in YS history and that was in the 2015 season. Goals will be scored.

To me, a loss is pretty much disastrous and a multi-goal loss means pack it in.

Best possible result would be a multi-goal win and a clean sheet. For example, win 2-0? If NYCFC then goes down to ATL and scores a goal, ATL needs four to move on.

Would you rather...

take a 0-0 draw
or
a 2-1 win
Win. A draw leaves too much on the table. Get a win today and any result other than a loss next week is fine. Depending on the size of the win today, even a loss next week could be fine.

Probably so. I'm just being paranoid and pessimistic about letting ATL go home with any away goals.
Away goals throw people off. But if you're home in the first leg, you should always accept the trade of a bigger lead at the cost of more away goals. You're better off at 5-2 and even 6-3 than 2-0.

Correct. I feel like people are confounding this with the actual predicament for an away team in leg one where losing 2-1 or drawing 0-0 are kind of equal, depending on the specific team’s makeup and tactics.

If I’m Atlanta, I take losing 2-1 over a goalless draw. They have to pretty much plan that they will both score and very likely give up 1 at home, so make us have to get a 2nd before they count double.

I watched the end of the MLS PreGame show. They made predictions for the first leg. The only matchup where Klingenberg, Doyle, Carr and Warshaw agreed was NYCFC wins today. Mostly by 2 goal margins.

No. We don't want their support. We want them to continue the NYCFC suck narrative.

I think ATL is severely hindered without almiron starting. Their counter really relies on him getting into some space and out-pacing the opposing CDM. I think we've seen enough to know Herrera is up to the task, and that the pitch size does a ton to hurt their style. Can we capitalize? I still don't think ATL's defense is great, and Guzan is more vulnerable than he showed last time out. If they don't score on a set piece, I think they don't score at all today.

The good news is, I trust this team, with a full squad, to be able to bunker a bit at ATL if we end up with a goal or two lead at the end of the night. Continuity over the last week should give a nice added boost. That said, I think we give one up off a set piece.

I don't remember. We can get in with our seasoncards, right? Or is it a separate ticket
