New York City FC vs. Atlanta United FC
Yankee Stadium
Saturday, June 9 12:30 PM ET
YES, WNYE 91.5 FM & WQBU 92.7 FM

We wrap up a tough week playing host to Atlanta United.
They’ll be coming off back to back games in 4 days but on 6 days rest whereas we will be on 3 having played Orlando and RBNY.

Bit surprising this one isn’t on national television.

Atlanta also has an Open Cup game on Wednesday (vs Charleston Battery, albeit at home) so they will be on 3 days rest too but also have to travel to NYC.

Amazing. ATL has twice as many penalties awarded as the next team. It seems like every game they play there's some sort of controversy and advantage. Hope that's not the case Saturday. At least we don't have to travel with a 63-hour turnaround between games.

It’s a conspiracy to get ATL in the CCL so that MLS can be showcased in their stadium against high caliber Mexican teams. Showcasing games there, on TV, is far better marketing for the league than at Yankee Stadium.

Why are we having a political statement at our game? How disgusting. /s

Not quite twice. Atlanta has 10 penalty kicks and Toronto has 6, but still.

Atlanta is +7 on PKS and +1 on Red Cards. Their combined +8 also leads the league. SKC is +5 combined and Columbus +4. NYC is a combined +3. Montreal is the worst off at -5. Houston, LAG and LAFC are all combined -4.

Finally, the MLS record for PKs taken in a 34-game season is 11. Atlanta is at 10 after just 14 games.

ETA With respect to penalty kicks, the +/- figures above are based on taken and given. Whether it was made is not relevant. This is a measure of ref decisions, not player results.

You have to think we'll see an MLS record in PK's this season though because of VAR. It would make sense that in this new era there would be more PK's. I also think ATL has gotten a few PK's from VAR as well.

Also PK's can be a skill set of a highly-skilled team like they are. They're so shifty and so tough to stop, teams end up chopping them down more often. I don't think PK's are singularly a sign they are being treated differently by the refs, I think it's a sign they're the most highly-skilled attacking team in league history and are challenging defenses in a way no team ever has before.

I agree that's a likely factor, but we'll have to see when we get to the end of the year. Last year had a half season of VAR and the average PKs per team was 5.36. That's one full PK lower than the highest of 6.56 in 2014.
