Jack Harrison [Midfielder]

That is most likely a fluff piece - BR is known for stretching innuendo. If both clubs are bidding on Jack, MLS can’t show favoritism towards MCFC because of the existing ties - they are bound by a fiduciary responsibility to the league to get the most out of the transfer so if ManU makes a better bid, and NYCFC and Jack are open to “a” transfer in general, then MCFC is going to have to up their offer or lose out.

Somewhat disagree. Man City has already been dealing with MLS for a few years now, not just NYCFC now too with their purchase of Palmer-Brown. Would be in best interest of the league to further that relationship so MLS can get an aging Silva or Aguero (wishful thinking, probably) or some of their young guns that don't pan out for the EPL, while some of MLS's brightest get a chance at Man City.

That said, if it is at Man City bidding $1M and Man United bidding $5M, you obviously go Man United. If it is a $500K to $1M difference, go with the team that has been a partner. (it's funny I am making this argument, because in the Chanot thread I said go with the high bidder)

I’m pretty sure the league cannot make that arbitrary decision because MCFC is another org within the CFG umbrella. Just as if MCFC wanted to sell Aguero to NYCFC for $500k* and LAFC was willing to pay more, MLS would have to go with the higher amount unless NYCFC bought LA off so they’d back out. It’s also why Hererra is loaned to us and wasnt bought by us, because then MLS would control the transfer, and MCFC ultimately wants to control his movement.

With that said, Jack would also have a say in where he would end up, and there’s no guarantee he’d pick MCFC with their horrible record of tapping youth up. Granted, they may treat him differently since he’s English and being touted as the golden boy (serious jersey sale potential). This is all to say, it’s not a slam dunk at all for CFG to retain the rights to our wunderkid.

(*arbitrary number showing MCFC wanting to give NYCFC a discount)

It raises the interesting question of what it is Jack actually wants. I don't think he's ever spoken publicly about it, but I could be wrong.

We assume that he wants to go to Europe if he can, and that's probably right, but it's only the beginning of the questions. How badly does he want to go? Would he go to a lower tier league? Would he sit on a bench somewhere? Would he go somewhere knowing he is going to be lent out to start with? Maybe he feels he is developing well in NYC and wouldn't go overseas unless it was to get real time in a Top 4 league. If so, perhaps that means he doesn't sign with a Manchester and instead waits 2 years and goes to Bournemouth.

I think they could, and I think they would, if the bids were, say MCFC $1m and ManU at $1.1m. It is in the league's best interests to favor MCFC in these types of scenarios. But if MCFC is materially outbid, then I agree with you.

Agree with you re Bleacher Report and MLS rules. But, if both offers are in the same ballpark, I don't foresee MLS screwing over one of its ownership groups that is supposed to be one of the flagship programs in the league.
League has a huge interest for NYCFC not to appear like Man City's farm team. If it is close, Man City will bid more.

If he's going to go, I hope he goes this winter and not mid-season next year. Mid-season exits are awful.

If he were to leave this year he'd have 2 years of MLS experience and thus we'd only get 1/2 of the transfer fee. If he were to stay until the summer then he'd have 3 years of MLS experience and thus we'd get 2/3 of the transfer fee.

I think he goes either in the summer 2018 or after the 2018 MLS season.

He won't go anywhere but England. Englishmen have extra value in the Premier League given the fact you need a certain number of them on your roster.

and now that he is an U-21 player the hype will be bigger and may have more suitors

Yeah but he's already shown willingness to take the unconventional route in order to better his options. For example, I could imagine him playing in Girona or in the Netherlands with Breda, I believe, in order to improve more rapidly as a player and just to enjoy a different culture.

If you look at his actual route as explained by him. He wasn't the catalyst for coming to the US and playing soccer here, it was his mother. She basically said, you're going to the US to study.

Not sure if this has been discussed but the current word on twitter is that jacks recent call up to the England u21 team leaves him ineligible to play for the USMNT.

I saw this discussed on twitter today, and was a bit bewildered - it's pretty cut/dry that unless you already are a dual-citizen, or have the heritage to apply for another passport via a parent/grandparent, then any YNT appearance is the cap-tying kiss-of-death.

I'd like to think this was explained to Jack ahead of time, and he fully understood it, and this twitter crap is just a bunch of naive fans & ignorant journalists acting surprised..... because if Jack is the one surprised by this, then somebody advising him - beit NYCFC or USSoccer failed him -> I wouldn't expect the English FA to explain the rules because they would want to cap-tie him.
