Jon Patricof Named New President of New York City FC

  • Patricof to formally take up role in March 2016
  • President Tom Glick to remain in New York through Spring 2016 to aid transition
  • Glick to assume commercial position in City Football Group later in year
New York City FC is delighted to announce the appointment of Jon Patricof as its new President. Patricof, the former President and COO of Tribeca Enterprises, parent company of Tribeca Film Festival and related activities, will take up the post in March, prior to the start of NYCFC’s second season in Major League Soccer (MLS).

NYCFC President Tom Glick will continue in his role until March and will remain in New York through Spring 2016, working with Patricof in the early months of transition. Glick will, later in the year, assume a role overseeing commercial activities across the whole City Football Group.

Patricof, a native New Yorker, helped to develop Tribeca Enterprises over the last 11 years into a globally recognized media company, growing the Festival into a major New York and global institution. He has spearheaded numerous landmark partnerships including an investment by Madison Square Garden into Tribeca in 2014 and the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival, a very successful multi-year partnership with ESPN. Previously, he was an executive in the Strategic Planning Department at The Walt Disney Company.

He will report to Ferran Soriano, CEO of City Football Group and Managing Director of NYCFC, who oversaw the recruitment process in consultation with Vice Chairman Marty Edelman and the wider NYCFC board.

Speaking about the appointment, Vice Chairman of New York City FC Marty Edelman said:

“We are extremely pleased that Jon has agreed to join the Club. He has a fantastic feel for the New York community and rich experience across business and entertainment. Over a relatively short time, he has done an exceptional job with Tribeca and we believe he is the right person to lead the Club into the next phase of our history.”

Echoing these thoughts, Ferran Soriano, CEO of City Football Group and Managing Director of New York City FC said:

“We are delighted to welcome Jon Patricof to New York City FC. He has the experience, the passion and the vision to build on the excellent work that Tom Glick has been implementing. He joins a club already rooted in the five boroughs of New York and with solid foundations across the board. I am looking forward to working with him.”

Tom Glick, President of NYCFC said:

“I am pleased to be part of the preparations for our second season and to work with Jon as he settles into his new role in March. I know what a bright future NYCFC will have under his leadership, alongside our superb Sporting Director, Claudio Reyna and our new Head Coach, Patrick Vieira.”

Jon Patricof said:

“I cannot wait to get started at NYCFC; a great Club that has already had a significant impact on the New York community in its first year. There are tremendous opportunities for growth and I am looking forward to working with Patrick, Claudio and the front office team to deliver a great experience for our fans, partners and for New Yorkers.”

Interesting hire. Guy has done a great job building an entertainment brand and organization. He's well connected in the city. Seems like he has good connections at ESPN and with the Dolans. All of this can help the club a great deal. He doesn't have a particular soccer or sports background, so one assumes his role will have nothing to do with improving the product on the field.

R roxfontaine, you should reach out to this guy right away.

I like his background and track record, love that he is a NYer, would prefer some soccer background

Know nothing about the guy. Went to his twitter profile and noticed he follows the whole Manchester United team. gross. He does follow a ton of different teams in various leagues around the world, various organizations, and lots of soccer reporters, so at least we know he cares about soccer unlike some past and current MLS club presidents.

This seems to be a virtually ideal hire for this role on paper. Hopefully he works out well, but it does not hurt to get a well connected guy in the organization. With Tom Glick overseeing commercial activities in his new role, can we assume that is essentially running the stadium search?

You think so? Please elaborate. I'm looking to learn here.

Either way, I'm excited to meet him and see what he's about. Glick was a great listener the time that I met him. I hope this guy is too.

True, but the team does need help improving the product off the field and a entertainment guy should be able to greatly improve the fan experience for those that are looking for more than just a game.

don't think his role will be NYCFC specific although he could have some involvement

He's the son of Alan Patricof who was the founder of Apax Partners.

Yeah, this seems like the kind of guy you'd think they were looking for.

Local to New York, strong experience building a brand unique to the city, entertainment background, and relatively connected. You'd also think that he understands the logistics of holding events in NYC with his experience from Tribeca.

I don't think he'll have any control over the sporting aspect. This seems like a reasonable hire for the rest of it.

I think this was a a strategic...ambassador to the city, knowing the right people to build a stadium...hire. He's not a soccer guy, he's a brand guy. Which is fine, cause he won't be tinkering with players/personnel.

Interesting hire.

Reviewing the leadership that has come and gone, it makes me question my initial thoughts on Pernetti leaving.

It seems like Glick was just filling in until they could find a permanent replacement.

yep - Glick was interim & never planned to stick around. This new guy is technically only the 2nd real Pres for NYCFC, and many pundits are forgetting that a lot of time was spent doing team president stuff before the first season kicked off, so this is not a case of 3 pres in 1 season as it's being spun....
