Josh Saunders [Goalkeeper]

Updated numbers:

Games 30
Minutes 2700
shots faced 148
saves 93
save % - 62.9 (19 out of 20 in MLS)
goals allowed 52

GAA 1.73

There's a discrepancy between shots faced, saves and goals conceded which I can't explain. Take up your pitchforks with the Washington Post.

Could it be posts/crossbar hits? I'm not sure if those count as a shot on goal, and they certainly wouldn't count towards the saves portion. I think it may be similar to the NHL in that shots that hit the post don't count as a shot on net. Only thing I can think of it potentially being.

Those definitely should not count. The only other thing I can think of is shots cleared off the line by defenders like the one Matarrita had a few games ago tracking back (was that against Orlando?)

This also brings me to a pet-peeve of mine from announcers. When they say things like, "[insert goal-keeper's name] has to thank the post/crossbar there". Ummmm no they don't have to "thank" the post or crossbar. What they do have to thank is the guy who shot the ball, because his shot wasn't good enough to go in the net.

Not saying you were going there at all, haha. And its one of those things that bothers me a lot more than it really should, lol.

Hahaha it's all good man. Unrelated to soccer, but hockey-wise I know some goalies will respond to a player hitting the post by saying that "it was the only area he gave them to shoot."

Nah. Whatever you think about Josh's playing ability, we have a top 10 keeper. That's a positive.

Here is the basic outline of metrics for GKs.
That list is incomplete. What about passes that put defense under pressure, punching rather than catching, mishandling passes in the box with attacker in your face, shots on own-goal with back of head..... The list could go on and on.....

You get more points for diving saves and finger tip saves, so essentially it rewards poor positioning that causes more dives than necessary and slow reflexes that result in finger tip saves. Makes sense that Josh would do well in this measurement system.

Also a drastic amount of points for a penalty saved. Though I feel most saved penalties are moreso due to a poor shoot and not so much great goalkeeping.

There are 86 metrics in total. They never show all of the metrics for a position because propietary and blah blah blah. With 86 different metrics included he's still a top 10 keeper in this league. If you stop and think for a second, what does that tell you about the rest of the league?

This. You can't ignore that he comes up with some insane saves regularly. These score big and he's averaging well. Whatever the metrics are, he's ranking well within them and it's all positive for the team. Jack Harrison and Frederic Brillant also placed in the top 10 for their respective positions.

Kreis must have a guilty conscious for ruining our first season. He may not be a religious man but he is repenting. Bless his little soul.

Saunders to Orlando for a future 4th round pick (i.e., virtually nothing). Hopefully they are covering his full salary. If so, thanks Kreis, for bailing us out of that one.
I'm surprised we got anything for him, but I guess a fourth round pick is a close to nothing as you get in MLS trades.

There had to be something. Although since it was a 4th round pick, I wonder if having the locker room vending machine filled for the season wouldn't have been a savvier move?
