Looking Ahead - Winter Window

A guy on Twitter posted a list of the guys available on a free after this season in Europe. Some interesting names (even a couple that have been thrown around here before). Going to just list the names. There are certain guys who I think would be terrific, but I doubt they would come here at this point in their career. There are other guys who would probably love to come here, but I hope we don't go after them. Would be interesting to see if any of them could be had in the winter window:

NO WAY IN HELL:
Alexis Sanchez
Mesut Ozil
Isco
Ander Herrera
Leon Goretzka
Emre Can
Ross Barkley

POSSIBLE:
Juan Mata
Fernandinho
Jack Wilshere
Marcos Llorente
Yohan Cabaye
Joao Moutinho
Kwadwo Asamoah
Hatem Ben Arfa
Arjen Robben
Zlatan
Andres Iniesta
Santi Cazorla

Certain guys would be great fits. Understanding what the club is looking to do, the only names I think that would be doable sense right now would Cabaye, Moutinho, Ben Arfa and Asamoah. I was never a big fan of Wilshere, but that would be interesting. I don't know what to think about Ross Barkley but it would never happen. In a dream world? Juan Mata is probably the guy on this list that would be perfect. It would be a post World Cup 2018 signing and he would be 30 years old. Herrera fancies himself a future Spain Captain otherwise that would be another guy that would make sense but I don't think that's happening.

Would LOVE to see Fernandinho in MLS. Would absolutely crush the league.

Mata at 30 is an MLS 5.0 move, let's do it!

Toronto has the best DP assortment in MLS history, plus they have the best TAM player in MLS at the moment in Vasquez. It's no wonder they are running away with the Supporters Shield.

Their 3 DPs are better than our 2nd and 3rd DPs at the moment. Their TAM player is better than our 2nd and 3rd DPs right now too.

If we were SKC or Orlando or San Jose, you live with DPs that are borderline. We should expect more. That's all.
Bench depth is a bigger reason for their success. They have 6-7 guys on their bench that are starting caliber players. We have maybe 1 in Jonathan Lewis.

Didnt claudio tell you it wouldn't be any one we've heard of?

I think it's just a matter of individual players. A few years back there was the assumption that USMNT players were the only non-retirement age DP-caliber guys willing to come to the MLS. Come back home, so to speak. But that trend doesn't exist anymore, if it ever did. So right now it's more an issue of seeing which really high DP caliber guys are willing to come. For example, guys in Arsenal's roster who really really need a change of scenery and are not a pipe dream for us. So no Alexis or Ozil, but maybe clear subs like Debuchy or Joel Campbell or even a guy like Lucas Perez. I just mention Arsenal because it's due for a massive rebuilt.

That would make the Berget deal definitely a big mistake. OTOH Campbell is just 25 and very talented, which means he would be a perfectly qualified high-quality replacement for Villa in the long run. We have the Jack transfer money. The question is whether starting LB or second ST is a position of greater need for us. Also you cannot bring Campbell as a bench player. Would have to play in a 4-4-2 with Villa. Midfield of Herrera, Ring, Maxi and Jesus. Bench both very promising Tajouri and Wallace. But you're getting a 25 y.o. with EPL and LaLiga experience. It's tempting.

Striker is a bigger concern.

Campbell seems checked out and gives low effort for long stretches when he played in the EPL, you think he's going to come to the MLS and start taking things seriously, I'd pass.

Who says Campbell wants to be a backup in MLS? Your not going to be able to find much better players than Berget who will willingly be a backup in this league.

This is what people need to remember. It is likely the reason that Mullins and then Shelton wanted trades. Being a backup to David Villa is not a gig for a player who wants to challenge for time on the field (and let's hope that remains true this season).

Doesn't Campbell primarily play on the wing? If we were to sign him, wouldn't the obvious lineup be Medina, Villa, and Campbell across the top with Tajouri and Berget as the top two backups and Wallace and Lewis rounding out the attacking group?

Not necessarily endorsing Campbell, I just don't understand the discussion about suddenly playing two strikers or having him backup Villa.

----Campbell---Villa---Tajouri----

------------------Ring----------------
Mata-Callens-Chanot-Tinnerholm

Bench: Stuver, Sweat, Ibeagha, Herrera, Berget, Wallace, Lewis

Unstoppable.

Taking Hererra out of the midfield takes a massive body out who can muscle the opponent off the ball. Our record with him in the lineup is ridiculous and serves as a prime reason to include him.

I guess it would depend on the opponent, im sure that team could work against teams who don't press high.

Even if we need Hererra, we would still be able to keep our forwards fresh by rotating them. Injuries ruined us last season.

Honest question, for those that like Campbell have you watched him play for a club team or only in the world cup? He's never come close to matching the output or potential he showed at the 2014 WC in any of his club team appearances since then.

So looking for the next transfer window the real question is either are we going to add depth or do we have enough money to try and push one of our starters onto the bench.

My gut feeling is that we probably don't have the ability to push someone to the bench in a sustained manner, maybe a half season signing. Since sporting organizations don't like bringing in players for half of a season due to squad cohesion issues, a long term singing is probably someone who is going to be a back up player.

The player we need in that scenario is someone who can vaguely look like Ring and act as a connection between the backfield and midfield as a CDM. I think Sands might eventually be there, but as of this moment he's still a 15-16 year old kid who simply has not filled out enough to have the physicality that we need. On the other hand I still remember when he played last year, and damn that kid can pass.
