Looking Ahead - Winter Window

I like the idea of a box to box capable midfield DP3. Think Alex Ring with the ability to actually score when he shoots.

Though to be fair if Ring could actually shoot he'd be a marginal champions league player.

Ben Sweat has the same amount of goals and assists this season as Matarrita did in 2016 (with Sweat taking just one more game to do that)

Is Matarrita expendable? Discuss.

Not without a replacement LB. Ben Sweat should not be the starter. The goal and assists have been great, but we need a better defender

Hot take, Matarrita is overrated relative to his transfer value

TMac - high Cap Hit.
I still don't get that damn contract, unless it was to make him more attractive to trade partners. Or did his agent pull one over on Claudio and convince him that he would leave for the Airtricity? I'd have wished him luck and sent Khiry to help him pack.

Makes zero sense especially after seeing some of the American players the FC Cincy has. They have guys as good or better than 2016 TMac. 2017 TMac would be shining their boots before games.

Matarrita is overrated
Period.

But he's properly rated for his quality-to-salary and/or his quality-to-replacement. It's unfair to compare stats Sweat has achieved playing alongside a far better cast to what Mata penned with the horribly flawed team of 2016. Given the talent and ability I've seen from Mata, I could easily see many of those times Sweat gets pinned at the sideline or stops his attack 10 yards into the attacking half or has no ideas on the edge of the box turn into dangerous chances if Mata were out there.

I really don't recall Mata ever getting too hemmed in or being overly-indecisive. With Wallace and he on the left, we were killing people down that side early in the year.

Probably. Most teams interested see a raw talent with all the physical attributes to be a good LB at a major level.

Still think if he was playing all year though, he'd have at least as good stats as Sweat because this year's overall team is way better than last year's
Well, should have read your post first. I copied your sentiment, but added more reasons.

I can't necessarily agree that he's overrated relative to his transfer fee because I don't know what that fee is or what that really even means. If he's over-rated and the fee is more than his actual quality deserves, then his price would accurately reflect his perceived level.

Let's not forget he's a starter for a top 20-30 NT, guys. The kid is pretty damn good, even if he doesn't defend for shit many times (apparently, that's a thing for NYC leftbacks).

2017 Formation - 352
ST: Villa, future signing needed, *Harrison?
CAM: Maxi, *Harrison?
LM/LWB: Mata, Wallace
RM/RWB: Harrison?, future signing is a must
CM/CDM: Ring, Herrera(fingers crossed), future signing needed
CB: Callens, Chanot, future signing is a must
GK: Johnson
The rest: Lewis, Awuah, Shelton, Camargo, Ferraresi, Sweat, Sands, Mena?, Rawls?

Hopefully gone: Ned Grabavoy Jr., Sterzer, Lopez, Allen, Gomez, Lurch, White, Mix
Cap casualty: Brilliant(Personally like him only when he starts but his contract is ridiculous)
  • Mata should be kept, his style of play fits perfect into 3-5-2 as an outside wingback/midfielder
  • Where would everyone want Harrison to play? I would want him at CAM for years to come but he has to work on his final pass for that and knowing when to get rid of the ball.
  • Also what players would everyone want to see signed for the open positions: ST, CM, CB
  • Which position signed would be the DP?

Honestly, yes, Matarrita is expendable. But not because of Sweat. Because of Wallace.

Both players are probably best as LM. Both are great LM. Keeping both would be awesome for depth purposes, especially if we move to a 3-man back line.

But as K Kjbert implied, if we can get a relatively large transfer fee for selling him, and add a couple hundred thousand of GAM, that's probably a good move. Conclusion: Expendable at a certain price.

If we keep Herrera and move to a 3-5-2, the DP should be a striker.

Keeping Herrera complicates things, because as good as depth is, will MCFC keep him here if he's not a first choice starter? Which means we may have to choose between a DP CM and Herrera.

A DP CM next to Ring in either a flat 3-4-3 with Maxi at LW or a 3-5-2 with Maxi at CAM looks pretty good, as long as we sign two new backup CMs for depth.

No matter what formation we play, more right sided players are needed (RM, RB, RCB).

When is Matarrita expendable? IF the idea is to play a Back 3 next year, he is especially expendable because he has a value on the transfer market and his position on the left side can be covered by a player like Wallace.

If we go with a back 3 next year, you could play Ring and Herrera centrally. Maxi and Harrison could play underneath Villa. Wallace goes wide left.

Then spend your DP money on a RWB. I have no clue who that person might be. But Fab Johnson would be really fun (as someone previously mentioned)

Or you got to a 3-4-3 and get a RW. That gets Harrison central and keeps Maxi central. Both can pretty much float. Herrera goes box to box. Ring destroys in the middle.
