Fans will always express this opinion, but at the end of the day they will also never understand that for 99% of players, to represent their country is the greatest honour they can have, above and beyond being fit for their club.

True, apparently he was. That said, from the various things I've read in the past of players who have represented a country other than their birth country, they often still feel quite attached to it and proud of what they are doing.
