MLB Playoff Dates - Potential Stadium Conflicts

Further Update - the below assumes the Yankees make the World Series.

Sunday, Oct 22: Home vs. Columbus
- ALCS Games 6 and 7 are Oct 20 and 21 (Yankees would only host if win AL East and have better record than opponent)
- WS Game 1 is Oct 24 (Yankees host if they have better regular season record than NL opponent)
- No Conflict

- Conflict due to need to work on Yankee Stadium and the field in advance of World Series. Game Relocated to Citi Field.

Wed/Thur, Oct 25/26: First Round Knockout Game (NYC only hosts if finish 3rd or 4th in East)
- WS Games 1 & 2 are Oct 24 & 25 (Yankees host if have better regular season record than NL opponent)
- WS Games 3, 4 & 5 are Oct 27, 28 & 29 (Yankees host if have worse regular season record than NL opponent)
- Conflict with World Series; Citi Field appears to be open.

Mon/Tue, Oct 30/31: Eastern Conference Semifinals Game 1 (NYC only hosts if finish 3rd, 4th or 5th in East)
- WS Games 4 & 5 are Oct 28 & 29 (Yankees host if have worse regular season record than NL opponent)
- Conflict unless game can be moved to Nov 1; Citi Field appears to be open.
- WS Games 6 & 7 are Oct 31 & Nov 1 (Yankees host if have better regular season record than NL opponent)

SunWed, Nov 51: Eastern Conference Semifinals, Game 2 (NYC hosts if finish 1st or 2nd in East)
- WS Game 7 is Nov 1, so no conflict unless substantial delay
- No Conflict

- WS Game 5 is Oct 29; so Yankee Stadium would have 3 days to turn field for this game assuming no rain delay.
- Citi Field begins hosting Stadium Links Golf on November 3, and it is unclear how long they would need to prepare.

The short version of the above is that any knockout game is probably at Citi Field. The first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals would probably be at Citi Field too, unless they can move to November 1. The return leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals would be at Yankee Stadium unless there is a rain delay in the World Series.

So, which one is Don Garber going to pick and communicate to Elfath on Sunday to make happen?

I just looked this up out of idle curiosity and it's kind of hilarious. It's sort of like archery except you're hitting golf balls. From the upper deck of a stadium, onto greens-like targets on the field. Your "golf score" is based on how far away from the flag your shot lands. Bottom line is that it'd be *very* easy to move this to another weekend although I suppose that really depends on how many tickets they've already sold.

More info: http://www.stadiumlinksgolf.com/about/

Also, I'm guessing it'd take a a while to set this up. They have to paint or mow the field into patterns and also install the tee platforms. Maybe a week?

They could also just throw down some turf greens on top of the grass too...

I just want to circle back here to 2015 when the NYCFC schedule came out, and the last 4 games went A-A-A-H. I remember a bunch of us figuring there was some reason for it, that maybe they knew there would be some gap or structural opening in the MLB playoff schedule in 2015 that would make that last Home game not conflict with a potential Yankee playoff schedule. Then it was moot when the Yankees did not make the playoffs.

When the same A-A-A-H pattern showed up in 2016, we realized it was not year specific, and wondered what was so special that there was always a way to have that last game at home. We couldn't figure it out, but we figured there was a plan.

BSG-plan.png

But we couldn't learn anything else because again the Yankees didn't make the playoffs for the fourth straight year..

So 2017 comes and again the season ends A-A-A-H and finally the Yankees make the playoffs and we find out the plan was to hope the Yankees don't make the playoffs. Basically NYCFC clears out for a month, with 3 Away plus an international break, and then you schedule one last game at Home because it's just ridiculous to schedule the last Home game more than a month before he season ends, and then hope the Yankees fail. That was the whole plan.

On the NYCFC Nation podcast, one of them said he attended a meeting with Patricoff and Edelman. Patricoff said that if Yanks were in WS and we have 2 seed, we're still playing the 2 leg at Citi. NYCFC even offered extra money to Yanks to get field ready in time for playoff match, but they said no. They have extra stuff to take down because of the WS and they don't care. So, it's nice you went through scenarios, but looking like we're at Citi for any home matches till conference finals.

Also interesting, Patricoff said that Citi could become our official alternate venue.

More interesting, Patricoff said that despite the club's relationship with Yankees, they can leave YS at any time for another venu. Could the Mets/Citi be wooing us to play there till we have a permanent home? Especially if we are headed to Willets West? It would make a lot of sense to start playing closer to where we'd be eventually based.

I just got a call from NYCFC asking if I’m interested in extra tix for Sunday :)

I asked about the playoffs and alternate locations and being locked in per our playoff “purchase” last month. The response I got is they have scenarios being looked at with a lot of moving parts and they won’t know for sure until the end of Sunday (I already knew that), but they’re approaching the playoffs with the intent to be at Yankee Stadium.

What??!!??!! Either they’re all delusional about the World Series situation, or information isn’t flowing down to the people manning the phones, or they haven’t been watching our team’s crappy play for the last two months, but to say YS is what they’re banking on is just a bit disingenuous (and I’m being nice because the caller admitted these decisions are above her pay grade).

I’ve had a long week, I’m burned out with work, and the one really gratifying event (outside of my family) that I look forward to each week is a discombobulated mess. If we don’t win Sunday, against an organization reeling under the weight and hammer-blow of an asshole owner, then our own org has got some real soul searching to do before 2018, both in the FO and in the team.

my question is if we win Sunday does citi field become the host on november 1st? what about the whole golf thing....that happens two days later

i dont think they are wooing us....since we run into the same problems if the mets make a run ....id like to think having a spot in area is the goal....unless this is the attempt to woo the wilpons to give easier access to the land

They also said on the podcast they didn't charge our credit cards yet for playoffs because of this mess. I didn't check mine to see if that's true. And moving the golf thing was possible.

In my mind it's annoying, but I'm from LI and like Citi and tailgating. I just also really like my seats. And I was pissed at the way they put them on sale this time around. I hope for playoffs founding members get earlier access based on when we originally signed up. This really feels seat of their pants and that's what's starting to bother me.

Subway Series 2018, confirmed.

Seriously, I do like the idea of making Citi the presumptive alternate location. I'm looking forward to the experience on Sunday. I've actually never been inside it.

Completely agree. I hear it's a much better venue anyway, and there is no doubt the food is better. So, playing games there could be a positive, even if it's a little farther away for me.

If the Mets are willing to move the golf thing for us, then wooing us they are. Sure, it's a small novelty act, but they've had it planned for a while and have been selling tickets.

They shouldn't have charged them yet anyway, since we're paying round by round and we do not know what round we're starting in.

Citi is definitely a better venue for baseball with higher quality food options, an open stadium construct, and seats that angle towards home plate. But it’s the angled seats that may be an annoyance for soccer. I’m sitting in a section along the 1st base side that has them, and it’ll be great when the action is near home plate, but I have no idea how I’m going to enjoy it when looking toward the right field wall. Maybe it’ll be fine, and maybe I’m going to get a stiff neck - IDK.

We're all a little nervous our first time. Could be a great venue and we'll realize what we were missing out on these past few years. Hey, anything is better than sitting at home and Mixdebating. I'm looking forward to the tailgate; got kosher bacon cheese burgers on brioche buns and sausages too.

I may have to "accidentally" get lost and luckily "happen upon" your tailgate guy...
