Mls CBA 2015 Thread

I'm very disappointed in the agreement right now, honestly.

Even if they add a DP slot or two, add more allocation money, add more exemptions for homegrown players... a salary cap still under 4 million just makes your league look less than it is.

Several teams in MLS will be spending 20-30 million on salaries next year but the world will only hear that 3.56 million dollar salary cap and assume that's what your team is. What you think is saving you will really be a massive negative ad against you.

So stupid.

Players loss because owners now know the players will never strike. They did not even push it to the last minute. This was a perfect storm of expansion, new TV deals and huge opening crowds. If you are not going to take advantage of that you never will. But they voted, so they will have to live with the regret of what could have been over the next few years.

Fans loss too because the quality of the league is not getting better. We are no where near the top 4 (ENG, GER, SPA & ITA) or the second tier of the rest of Europe and ARG/BRA. We can't ever beat Liga MX. We are a fourth tier league... the equivalent of the rest of CONCACAF, Japan, etc. I am so happy to support a team like NYCFC that seems to be different than the rest of MLS. I can't support a league that strives to be mediocre. Can't fault the players. MLS talks a big game, but settled for small potatoes.

Still excited to be cheering for NYCFC this weekend, but this was a missed opportunity for US soccer.

You know, some of you guys ought to re-consider your negotiating tactics. The whole "if everyone is unhappy, it's a good deal" is bogus. It may mean it's fair, but fair and bad aren't mutually exclusive.

Having studied negotiation and participated in more than a few, I have to say it is far better emotionally and for future purposes if both sides walk away feeling like they won.

Personally, I love when the other party walks away from a negotiation feeling like they won. That means I did my job because if I didn't get what I want, I wouldn't be agreeing to it. If I can get what I need to make a deal happen, and the other guys think they "won", then I know I've kicked the shit out of them at the table.

I am really surprised that some of you think that mls is ready to hang em loose. The reason we got to where we are today is with the current system. This system is slowly changing for the better but it will take time. I get the feeling that some of you want mls to go head to head with the likes of LA Liga and epl and Bundesliga starting next month. Relax homies. It will take time but we will get there. Goodness.

You are right Kubah.

I have no idea why the players didn't push this further. By all indications the owners were ready to give a lot more to avoid a strike and the players just gave up early. I don't know why. It really is strange.

They need new leadership that's for sure. They could have gotten more out of this deal.

Now we'll have to wait and hope the league does something incredible with allocation money, homegrown player exemptions and more DP slots to keep things rolling forward.

Glad its a 5 year deal and not 7. I hope the players are out for blood next time.

Btw

@HelltownBeer: 15% team budget increase puts new num at $3.65m. Under last agreement it increased 5% each year. If same in new CBA, 2020 MLS cap $4.3m

And zero word on any DP increase.

What do you think of that?

Looks like the strike is off

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Wednesday, March 4, 2015) – Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Major League Soccer Players Union today announced that they have reached agreement in principle on the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) covering five seasons, commencing with the 2015 season and continuing through the 2019 season.

“We are pleased to finalize the framework for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with our players,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “We now enter our 20th season with enormous momentum with our new television partnerships, dynamic star players from the US, Canada and abroad, and two new expansion teams in New York City and Orlando that will debut in front of more than 60,000 fans on Sunday in the Citrus Bowl. This agreement will provide a platform for our players, ownership and management to work together to help build Major League Soccer into one of the great soccer leagues in the world.”

The concluding phase of the negotiations was conducted under the auspices of Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Deputy Director of Mediation Services and Field Operations Scot Beckenbaugh and Mediator Peter Donatello.

“We are pleased to announce that we have reached a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the league,” said Bob Foose, Executive Director of the MLS Players Union. “We are pleased to finally turn our fans attention back to our players and the competition on the field as we get started on the 2015 season.”

Major League Soccer’s 20th season kicks off Friday, March 6 when the Chicago Fire take on the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy in a nationally televised match on UniMás at 10 p.m. ET. The other 18 MLS clubs are in action on March 7 and 8, including a tripleheader on “MLS Soccer Sunday” when expansion teams Orlando City SC and New York City FC battle in front of 60,000 fans in the Citrus Bowl (5 p.m. ET, ESPN2), and Fox Sports 1 televises back-to-back MLS matches when Sporting Kansas City host the New York Red Bulls (7 p.m. ET) and Seattle Sounders FC welcome 2014 MLS Cup runners-up, the New England Revolution (9:30 p.m. ET).

Last post about the CBA for me because its over. The owners were huge winners they dropped a profit killing franchise added 2 cash cows and tripled their TV revenue and the cap only went up 15%.... Those numbers don't add up.

Regardless this weekend is going to be awesome and I can't wait.

You know who gets screwed? The guys who made around $20-30k over the minimum.

Or, we could hope for a best case, and that would be the shitty 25-30 year old players making less than $100k or so get cut, and we get a real youth movement across the league. I like having an optimistic outlook when it comes to my sports - give me young, unproven talent across the league rather than older, decidedly mediocre players with no upside who should just play NASL or USL or get a regular job. I frankly don't care about raising the salaries of people who have no business as a first division professional footballer.

Unless the cap increase comes with a roster size reduction, this is a fail for the league as a whole. Personally I am happy, because our team is playing a real game in four days but I was hoping the league would jump up near liga MX with this CBA
