Based on today's line-up, TFC clearly has decided that regular season success this year is overrated and it's been there, done that as far as the Shield. Columbus gets to play them for the second time next weekend in between CCL final legs, which is a decided schedule advantage.
TFC is really far back. 13 points behind us right now. EVen if they win their 2 games in hand they're still 7 back. I have to think they thought they could do better than this even with their squad rotation.

Yeah, they’ve definitely prioritized the CCL silverware over the Supporters Shield, which is understandable considering they’re in the finals, and they have a pretty simple run back to the CCL through the Canadian Cup; although it’ll be amusing if Vancouver torpedoes them. Still, considering how well some teams are playing in the East, if Toronto gets in to the playoffs as a 5/6 seed, they could have a rough go of it and roll snake eyes like we did with a fluky match. And Giovinco is due at some point to have his yearly injury, so their points are gonna be every harder to come by.

A couple of ifs here.. if DC hold on and beat Colombus and Revs lose to Dallas and we beat Atlanta it’s safe to say we’re running away with it to start the year.

we’re running away with t to start the year.
Is this even a thing? Can you really get so far ahead in MLS that no one has a chance (ie, pull a Man City)?

I would say no, but the only reason we're winning now is because of depth. If the supposed starters come back at 100%, I think we can run and hide with it. But it's so, so early right now. I don't think there's a reason to even look at the table for another 4-6 weeks.

mgarbowski mgarbowski said we’re waiting till week 9 to start predictions.

We actually have a rather “fortunate” last 6 matches of the year against likely “thanks for playing” teams. I won’t ever count anybody out (save for RSL) but some of those teams don’t appear to be able to match up with us unless they get serious reinforcements and/or we sustain a lot of injuries. If we’ve got a sizable lead, we should be able to hold it or add to it.

I think the real answer is that in a playoff league it hardly matters. As long as you're top 6 you're in the playoffs and that's it (ignoring for the moment byes and seeding). The story of the Premiere League this year has been all about if Man City will clinch today, how many can they win, can anyone at all beat them, how many records will they break, etc. And if you hate City and root for Chelsea, say, or perhaps even Liverpool it's all about staying close, trying to get spots 2 through 4, trying to ruin City's day, or perhaps steal the league MVP award with 50 goals maybe. But the point is that the season for MLS just doesn't matter, and to me that's the bummer of a playoff league where most teams get in. It's like all those NBA commercials on TV that say something like "the real season starts now."

Sorry, I'll just go do my grumbling back in my corner now. Carry on. :)

Obviously it was a bit out there to suggest the season is over. With Columbus losing and NE losing we could be 7 points clear tomorrow and only 7 games in. Not even at our best yet.

DC 1 - CLB 0
DAL 1 - NE 0
COL 2 - TOR 0

Favorable results for us tonight. Only negative result was RB 3 - MTL 1.

Tomorrow, either way, we’re top of the East. But Atlanta would be 1 point behind us with 1 game in hand should they win.

Given we only play Atlanta twice, I think tomorrow may be one of the biggest direct head to head matches of the season for determination of the Supporters’ Shield.

When thinking about standings, don’t sleep on Sporting KC. They’re only 3 points back, and they’ve got winless Seattle coming into town today.

If we lose today, there will likely be a logjam at the top.
Logjam, yes. But even with a loss by us and a win by SKC, we’ve got a pretty favorable GD that should keep us above them (unless worst-case scenarios take place). And we have the head-2-head win. Now that we have a legit 2nd scorer (still consider Villa our #1) and Maxi has stepped up his tallies and Medina is throwing down assists, I’m confident that we have the talent to ride the season above SKC as long as we aren’t snake bit by injures.

Hopefully Seattle drinks their strong coffee today and is amped to play.

I don’t take anyone for granted. But SKC is a flawed team. They start Khiry at ST. Let that sink in for a moment. Khiry doesn’t crack our 18 this season. If I had to put money down, I’d be betting on SKC reverting to the mean, rather than keeping up their current pace.

Johnny Russell is pretty damn good. Though, I do agree with you and think they revert to the mean a bit. They could be the best team in the West this year (time will tell on this), but I probably expect them to be top 4 in the West at least (barring significant injuries).

And winning against the West has been easier against the East and they get to play western teams twice.
