A lot of important games in the East this weekend while New England has two matches (1 on Wednesday):

Toronto hosts Chicago on Friday night
NJRB hosts Columbus on Saturday
Atlanta travels to RSL

I'd even add Philadelphia hosting Montreal. They're bottom of the table, but the Impact can stay in touch with the tight middle pack of the conference by getting points, and will be poised to climb as after this game they will have played only 2 at home and 5 away. Meanwhile the Union have to get points or will have lost touch with the rest of the conference.

And how about the Red Fools hosting Columbus? Both teams have a lot to prove: the Crew want to show that their early season form is real and that they are a contender; NJ want to show that they are still an elite team, especially at home.

Also, the game following ours on Sunday is Seattle at LA, and that's always a good one.

Looking at the East standings, I think every team will stay in contention this season except Philly.

I don't see any teams running away with the East this season. It's far too competitive. I think the difference between 1st and 10th will be jaw-droppingly thin. It will be almost as non-existent as the word "jaw-droppingly" itself.

I think when the music stops at the end of the season, we might be shocked who is in and who is on the outside looking in. It could be the same story out West, too, where Seattle and LA are currently on the outside.

Early days still...but not that early anymore. Things are starting to take shape, I think.

I've been thinking similarly for the last week or so, and I can't confidently predict anything beyond "Philly will likely be out of the playoffs again," but I also think things will shake out over time. Eventually 2-3 teams will be vying for 1st place, and we will probably figure who they are during the summer. I just don't know who they are now. I want to say NYC will be one of them, and it's a solid bet, but not a certainty. I do agree that most of the rest of the conference will be tightly bunched and the space between 4 and 9 or even 4 and 10 will be small, with the bottom teams not being eliminated until October. But that last bit seems to happen every year. Even we weren't eliminated until pretty late in 2015.

Poor Philly fans.
They went up 3-0
They drew 3-3
Ouch.

Poor Earnie

RB up 2-0 on Columbus. I always prefer seeing the Red Bulls lose but...

If we win tomorrow, we would still have a game in hand against them and Columbus and be level on points with RB and Columbus at 13, but lead in goal differential to be first in the East.

Atlanta still finding ways to grab points and score goals with Martinez out. That's scary. But man does the table look odd. Who would of pictures Atlanta, Orlando and Chicago in playoffs before the season started.

I Cannot be more impressed with what Atlanta have achieved so far.
Just coming here to post the same thing. They are one fun team. I secretly wish we played a little more like them, while I'm also curious how they hold up throughout the season.

I could totally see them slipping into one of the 4-6 slots and being hell on wheels in the playoffs.

I'm not sure they won't compete for the top 2 bye spots. They have only played 2 home games so far (and have 2 road wins).
They have 10 home games in the second half, including 6 of the final 8, which also includes 5 in a row in a busy September due to the 2 games that had to be rescheduled, which is a mixed deal. But they only have one mid-week game in that stretch. If they stay close to the top through August they'll have games in hand and a lot of home points to grab.

I hear you. But they are playing high pressure, counter-attacking football in Atlanta heat in the summer. I think it will take a toll.

Yep, in that heat they will either bolster their stamina or they're going to get really heavy legs. More likely the latter.

Following up on the GOTW this week, Villa's goal off the free kick is a nominee, against Giovinco's free kick, and goals where both Piatti and Nagbe worked around some defenders and scored from around 18 yards out.
Piattiti is winning with 48%, Nagbe has 42, and Gio and Villa are way back.

I think Villa lost last week not because MLS fans hate NYC and rallied around Jackson-Hamel just to deny Villa. Montreal fans just come out and vote for GOTW. I had some twitter interactions last week with Impact fans when the voting ended. Quite nice and friendly actually, but it was clear they took the vote seriously. And they're doing it again this week for a Piatti goal that I would rank 4th among the week's nominees.
