New CONCACAF Champions League format?

If the domestic leagues merge for shared tournaments, we're talking about serious frequent flier miles for players and the league will have to figure out creative scheduling to give our teams days off before/after travel to Uruguay and Argentina - I cannot imagine how jet lagged Vancouver players would be flying to/from Buenos Aires.

These should be available before our NYC stadium is built.

The interesting thing is that it will run from February to May - which doesn't alleviate the issues around MLS teams playing in pre-season, but it does shorten the competition and keep it from running during the last months of the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs, when MLS teams have other things to worry about.

Now that it's Feb - May how does MLS move things around so teams compete a few months after the previous season and not a year plus?

kinda sucks for costa rican teams...they have done well in this tournament and can actually only have one representative in new format
If I read it correctly they can send 2. 1 qualifies directly and 1 if they win stage 1.

they have even had 3 ( though thats because another federation did not meet requirements). and anything can go wrong and its not guaranteed they get 2 only 1....i still think they been consistent and done well in these tournaments, not saying they deserved 3 but definitely two

How does potentially not having Mix on the roster impact our ability to make a deep run in the new format?

This is a really good question. The teams playing CCL right now have been in the competition since the fall and qualified in 2015. The 2018 competition would seem perfect for awarding to MLS teams based on their performance in 2017, but what do you do about those who qualified this past season in 2016?

I think you'd have to transition starting with next year. The 4 2016 teams that qualified would still play in 2018. Then 2017 and 2018 would each send 2 teams to 2019. Make it winner of USOC and MLS Cup. If overlap go to Supporters Shield standings. Then 2019 MLS could go back to qualifying 4 teams for the 2020.

That's such a logical approach that it will never happen.

We'll have some weird qualifying tournament with like 8 teams, group stages and then 2,leg playoffs until final to find last spot

With CFU wanting out of CONCACAF, yeah that would make it more likely that the America's to merger.
Well this could change things a bit. I'll also post in USMNT thread, since it has different ramifications there.

Could this be the beginning of a merger of North Central and South American conferences?
CONACSAF?

update on who qualifies to the 2019 CCL - basically MLS CUP winner for 17 and 18 and US OPEN CUP winner of 17 and 18 will participate in 2019 version.

Pretty much what we figured should happen. Though I like the Canadian idea of a playoff for 2018. Pit last year's 4 qualifiers vs this years in and 8 team format for 4 spots. That would be pretty cool to watch. But where would you find the dates to play them? And what format would you choose?

Also, now I really want to win the USOC.
