New England Post Match

Well now Philly is a must win if we want to be in contention for that playoff bye.

Random Thoughts:

- Wasted an awesome game from Maxi
- Silver lining: happy for Carmago, I hope this goal is the confidence boost he needs to let his talents shine
- TMac made me miss Pirlo. With TMac we get all of the Pirlo downsides: slow, minimal defense with none of the upside: passing vision/accuracy, ability to handle the ball under pressure. Honestly I think Pirlo is a considerably better defender than TMac when you factor in positioning and effectiveness of tackles.
- Terrible tactics from PV, Brillant sub cost us the game
- What on earth are Lewis and Ugo doing in practice to create a situation where we are subbing on Brillant and Sterzer?

Disappointing.

I know everyone hates the Brillant sub, and not going to say it was a good idea, but, as the commentators like to point out constantly we hadn't yet conceded a goal in the last 15 minutes. We had been better at protecting the lead this year vs the previous two years. I don't see who is a better sub. At least Brillant is a proven commodity. How much game time has everyone else on that bench gotten?

Villa puts on some better shooting boots and this isn't even an issue because we are up by more then one

Hey what did Columbus do at home against the defending MLS cup champions? they WON

What is Houston on the way to doing against an awful RSL team at home? WINNING

But we'll decide to mark Kamara with David Villa and then bunker with 20 minutes left, letting them bomb crosses in and unsettling our back line.

This team is a specialist at one thing: outplaying the competition and dropping points. A Revs non-playoff team resting starters just tied a "supposed top 5 MLS team."

Think back on those 2-4 points on this and the RSL game when they need to win on the road to get in the playoffs or get a top 2 seed.

Proven at what? Scoring own goals and shitting the bed when it counts? Guy's one of the highest paid members of the squad and has contributed nothing. Get out of my club please - my season ticket money deserves better.

I'm kind of getting the feeling that we should have traded McNamara about a month ago but nevermind.

Vieira shat the bed tonight. What formation were we even playing once Brillant came on? Was it the hipster-approved 3-4-3 that a few people on here were advocating for earlier in the week? If so, congratulations lads, it looked fucking woeful. Maybe it works better for Chelsea, or Arsenal, or on FIFA.

On the plus side, Maxi Moralez is an absolutely outstanding player.

- You don't have David Villa mark Kei Kamara on a corner.
- The defending was poor on crosses.
- Questionable subs by Vieira. Up 2-1 in the 65' and Brillant come in?
(Regarding the subs, Camargo for Tommy was smart. When Brillant was subbed in for Harrison, I was like, why? Why Brillant? Why not? A better sub would be Sterzer or Awuah, pack the midfield, don't let them into the our third of the field.)
- Lee Nyugen spent more time on the ground than on his feet tonight.

But I am incensed by the refereeing tonight. I haven't seen a worse performance in MLS in person. Chris Penso missed a clear penalty that he say perfectly. There was a stoppage in play and everyone looked up at the replay. Defender's leg goes across Villa's body and he falls to the ground. Foul in the box. Penalty. It's like referees won't call fouls on Villa anymore.

That would be 2-1 in the 37' and changes the game completely and we likely walk away with 3 points.

Likewise, I haven't seen Vieira more incensed at the referees after a match at home than today. After shaking Heaps hands, we was just yelling at Sibiga. Then goes to shake the hands of the other refs and continues to speak with Penso for at least 90 seconds, which is a lot of time honestly.

I'm mad at everything.

And on a personal note, it was a pleasure meeting Taurus at the match tonight. And I was on the train with Arielle Castillo from MLS Digital on the way back. I kept my cool and didn't say anything but she was live tweeting the ride as people were complaining about Wegner.

I don't think Villa was "marking" Kamara. Villa never marks anyone on the corner. He is always that first guy at the edge of the 6 just trying to clear the ball. Obviously he could have done better since he got beat to the ball by Kamara, but also don't know if he even knew Kamara was coming.

Not sure anyone actually marks an opposing player on corners. Hasn't there been mention of the fact that we use zonal marking?

Penso is an asshole. Not only did he not call the penalty on Villa, by the end of the game he was letting the Revs mug him and calling a foul the other way. When he missed the penalty, Villa yelled at him "look at the screen" when they showed the replay. The defender literally kicked him in the chest. It's as if Penso was more interested in showing he was right than making the correct calls.

That penalty changes the game.

The refs suck every game, I get it. That said Villa does more bitching at the refs than any other player. Maybe he is fouled more maybe not but the refs aren't listening to his whining anymore. Put your big boy pants on and go play the game. While you are at it, stop with all the cute flicks that 99% of the time get intercepted.

2015 home games: Chasing from behind hoping to get the draw.

2016 home games: Scrambling to turn a draw into a win.

2017 home games: Ahead, hoping we don't give up a goal to lose the result.

Frustrating game but . . . we're moving in the right direction.

I forgave the ref for a lot of things when he gave NE that yellow for the fouls on Maxi after giving us advantage. That's an important move a lot of refs don't seem to make.
