NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2017

I'm not going to read Araos' stuff, but I am curious as to what he means by "stick with the 3-4-3". It didn't seem to me like we were playing a 3-4-3 last match, but moreso only had two up top. Harrison also was more of a wingback than a midfielder.

But maybe those items I pointed out were players not familiar with what they were being asked to do, and it should have taken a shape more like a 3-4-3.
If there only was a way that you could get the expanded article... :p

Vieira made the same point about Mata and Harrison being pegged back. Mostly as a result of Fred and Callens not playing wide enough. I'd be interested to see what this shape is supposed to look like in different phases of play.

Yeah, this is an article worth reading. You get some good views from Coach V on formation, Pirlo, and other things.

Good article.

Essentially Mata and Harrison are now the Wing Backs? Where were Wallace and Maxi supposed to be playing then? I don't get this

They were both very narrow. Tucked in behind Villa. That plus the narrowness at the back meant that we get overloaded wide a lot.

We probably need to hold the ball in the center for longer to give Harrison and Mata time to get into attacking positions.

I'm not gonna say that this formation can't work, but it will take a lot of re-programming for the players. For example, usually when the ball gets turned over in our favor, the instinct is to spread and make the field larger. But instead, we are asking Maxi and Wallace to tuck in, instead of running into the wide space that is left absent by Harrison and Mata. So if you are Ring or Pirlo, where is the outlet ball? The most obvious ball is to Harrison or Mata. But then they are receiving the ball deep. What is probably supposed to happen is that Callens and Brillant go wide to receive so that Harrison and Mata can get up the field. But that kills the counter attack. And Callens and Brillant are center backs by trade, so they aren't comfortable out there right now. Also nullifies one of Pirlo's strengths, the diagonal ball to the wingers. Also Ring and Pirlo have to sit very very deep in order to fill in the gaps between the back 3.

It's definitely a bit of a head scratcher.

Try Herrera at RCB then
Harrison is NOT a wing back. So dumb

I'm watching this video on Canadian TV about a mascot getting knocked out during this mascot presidents race yesterday at Nationals Park and it looks like one of the many mascots there is wearing our jersey.
Found a vid.

MLS puts out a video of all the long range goals scored in league history. It starts and ends with Villa. The very beginning of this video has the angle from behind the goal and starts from the throw in, so you can see where Blake is the whole time. He starts well outside the penalty area and starts backpedaling on the clearance. Still, he is just on the line at the top of the penalty area when Villa puts foot to ball, and that's too far for him to get back.
