And why is this bad, other than being too trendy for you?

That's one of the advantages. It has the flexibility to be one of the most attacking formations and one of the most defensive formations.

I used to think the problem with the 3-man backline is that it couldn't handle a good 3-man front well, as the opposing wingers would get behind your midfield and then stretch your 3-man defense too thin across the width of the pitch. But we have a pretty good 3-man front, and Toronto has had zero issues with us.

Juve couldn't run a 3-5-2 that often last year cuz of injuries to centerbacks, but when they could and it was Alex Sandro and Dani Alves as the wingbacks, dear God, it was a sight to see. If we held onto Mata, and then invested DP money into a speedy RB/RM type of player (maybe Fabian Johnson?), a 3-5-2 would work here.

In a 3-5-2, do you pair a Target Forward with an underneath guy? Is it a LS and RS?

Its just not some groundbreaking revolution, to me, that's all. Its hardly different than a 4 man back line with a CDM. TO didnt beat us because of some super fancy formation, they beat our midfield to the loose balls and kept it.

More likely because our two fullbacks (who play in the midfield), and who are hardly different than wingbacks, are not MLS starter quality.

People keep forgetting that when Toronto played the 3-5-2 against us at Yankee Stadium, they had zero DPs (Giovinco limped off early-ish) and were missing 5 starters overall.

It's not 100% formation and it's not 100% personnel, but it bugs me more when people act like it's the latter, because it's less actionable than changing the system. I think Vieira has actually seen the light and is now coaching us to mix it up between patient building from the back vs. bunkering and countering. Lo and behold our many legit injury problems are somewhat mitigated.

Kevin Prince Boateng looks to be available shortly. Pretty sure anyone would be able to sign him immediately as a free agent, correct? Or is that only if someone doesnt have discovery rights?

Since he is out of contract, anyone could bring him in even though the transfer window is closed. If someone else has discovery rights, that would necessitate a bit of TAM/GAM, but wouldn't prevent a signing, I don't think.

Doubt we can afford him in any event.

Messi can begin negotiating with other teams for a free transfer this winter.

CFG sign him to a 5 year deal with the last two coming at NYCFC?

No, Manchester will probably want him to stay the 4th year so he comes to NYCFC in July and suffered a nagging leg injury that will force him to miss the majority of the games here.
