NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

I don't know the exact transfer history, but I would take with a huge grain of salt the stories of big European clubs vying for Almiron out of Lanus in Dec 2016.

Maybe there was some big club mulling a low-risk buy to loan him out and stash him in Ligue 2 or something like that, but 8 million bucks is not a fee for a gameday-roster attacking player in a big club in Europe. Chelsea, Man City, etc. have around 15 players each or more withering forever in smaller European leagues.

The other reason for my skepticism is that Sports papers in SA make up stuff 80% of the time, literally.

If we compare the transfers of Almiron v Kaku, same age, similar small Argentinian clubs where they were starter 10s (Lanus v Huracan), relatively similar fees (8 M v 6.5 M) the only reason for Almiron to shine and Kaku to be good but not amazing may be luck. So it may not be that easy to guarantee you are getting an Almiron, a Kaku or a Medina once the ink dries.

For comparisons sake, James was not yet 19 when he had already taken the Argentine Primera by storm with Banfield and was being loaned to Porto with an option to buy. That's a surefire 18 y.o. if you're looking for one. That's one you'll be competing for with big European clubs that see him as a potential star down the road. Almiron may yet get there, but wasn't that kind of a prospect. Benedetto and other guys who are being mentioned as potential DPs in the 10 million transfer range are guys whose ceiling may be a bench in Europe.

For someone who occasionally has some inside information, you need to be more clear in your phrasing when you speculate, lol.

That’s fair.

Haak will not be the next HG signing. I know that.

I have no clue about our next DP. Someone on Twitter mentioned Cavani. It makes sense for next Summer at its face. But considering the cost and the Ownership groups involved, I can’t see it. But the profile fits.

It makes me very sad we've missed out on both Gio and now it seems Haak. Why even have an academy if it's best players sign elsewhere for free? And why should we even follow the academy if it's just going to lead to disappointment?

Gio is going to Dortmund. I think Haak will eventually sign. He just won’t be the next one.

Why would anybody sign before him if they have no avenue to game minutes? Unless a kid is doing it for immediate financial reasons to help his family, they should tell the club to pound sand until there’s an avenue for growth.

What's beating up on poor James Sands going to do?
Sands seems to have paid his dues and is gonna get minutes this season (fingers crossed). But K Kjbert said Haak won’t be the next HG, so that means somebody else is willing to sign for likely zero game time in their immediate future, so that doesn’t apply to Haak. Kinda wonder what Scally is thinking or if he cares at this point since he’s been active with the Academy team and YNT????

I was poking fun at your expression to "pound Sand".
