NYCFC to Play at NJ Red Bulls in U.S. Open Cup

the 7-0 , our record against them. the celebrations in locker rooms after the games. The heavy tackling......jesse marsch feeling offended about villa's comments....and the fan scuffles outside games.....if it wasnt a rivalry before the first game it is now.

EDIT: red bull will always show up for this game even if they are playing like shit.....the still feel like "new york name" is being taken away from them
And all of it is silly. It's way too much for only 6 games played. I'm sorry but to me it's too forced.

silly? same thing happens in other real rivalries across the world so none of it is silly in the end.

but why is it forced? to me its not forced when in social media the second the team was announced fans were were saying shit to each other ( even cosmos fans) and all the stadium jokes and all the man city light jokes .....when fans take the initiative to go after each other like that its not forced. this is waaaay before the TV stations starting putting these games in OTA and in national time slots on espn/ fox sports 1.

rb vs dc is supposed to be the true rivalry due to their history...but guess what? if you are part of the younger crowd and were not around 96-00 you dont even care about them...this is why those games are no where near our attendance at RBA or DC....even when RB has pretty much dominated that last few years and have their "20 years of hate" tifo. they have a good record against us but guess what they sure as hell care...when they see nycfc

Am I the only one who doesn't like this "derby"? Does no one else see how fake and manufactured this rivalry is?
The rivavrly is VERY strong between the supporter groups, believe me. Between last years pre 7-0 fight (yes i would call it that before the cops got involved) and the game after when our guys got jumped for their scarves. Yes its a rovavlry

Energy drink feels like NEW YORK is being taken away from them is the most FUCKING laughable statement from these dumb fucks since alexi lalas took a fake drink from an empty energy drink can saying how excited he was about red bull buying metros Or that pitiful retarted video of interns running thru out NYC in slow motion where instead of people saying oh yeah its a red bull soccer marketing the people walking the side walks had a look on their face that said these young fucks must be on drugs...

Fact

New york was never yours to begin with dear energy drink not cause you play in that SHIT HOLE OF A STATE new Jersey..... But because you were to cheap to ever really take New York...... your attempts were sad at best a few posters at that HEROINE Homeless shelter known as port authority bus terminal and a full page ad in Metro News paper from time to time.... and that one time you made an invasion of the NYC subway campaign it was posters of juan pablo angel with FUCKING NO INFORMATION about harrison arena or your team web site or telephone number to call for tix.... how ever your Energy drink slogan was loud and proud next to the Red Bull Logo that said GIVES YOU WINGS... i doubt any one in NYC saw that shit and was reminded of soccer how ever to pick up redbull to mix with vodka... that message was much stronger.......

at the end of the day YOUR FUCKING NAME is a huge turn off and a major handy cap... Its why you are irrelevant to NYC or its Media companies and most important insignificant to madison ave....

A FUCKING ASS KICKIN ON AND OFF THE PITCH is in order at the US Open cup and 10 days later in league action.....

On a side note its sad that theat NYCFC wont be able to give MY FORMER team the cosmos a proper ass kicking... the cosmos well deserve one especially after moths of the IDIOTIC statements from that Gumba dirt bag Rocco talking shit about MLS and NYCFC how the national team is GARBAGE and how he by himself is going to revolutionize US Soccer from top to bottom... A massive beating should have sent THAT FAT HEAD ROCCO back under the rock he crawled out of...... (bad enough that some thing that was once THE BIG TIME wound up in the hands of a BUNCH OF SMALL TIMERS.. cosmos were historic and today its a disgrace to what ever legacy it had earned... but you can thank pepe pinton for that cause he felt MLS was never worth of the Cosmos.. I guess being a semi pro disgrace these days is more to his liking...)

I expect a STRONG team to be fielded WE HAVE TO WIN its time to put things in their place
I WAS at the 7-0 beating........ It was at that moment right after that game that b4 leaving Yankee stadium where i doubled down and bought my NYCFC home jersey and got stuck in with NYCFC...

and it starts at open cup I could care less if we win the trophy or not BUT KICKING RED BULLS ASS AND SEND THEM PACKING AND THEN KICKING THEIR ASS AGAIN 10 days later is THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS RIGHT NOW... we need to beat down red bull to show them who matters in NYC and just because any fucking team named after a product be that mcdonalds fedex jack in the box or RED BULL, NEED TO GET THEIR ASS KICK ALWAYS... Their whole image and brand is a DISGRACE on principle alone........

cosmos try not to go bankrupt until after NYCFC gives you a proper stomping then YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION TO FOLD and send your loud mouth guido back to his iowa small time cable company

It's clear the fans hate each other regardless of marketing. The league has done what it can to manufacture things, but it was probably unnecessary.

BTW, it's clear who the league considers our next biggest chances for a rivalry when you look at the scheduling. By the end of 2017 we will have played RB, Orlando and New England 9 times each. All six other East teams will have played us only 7 times. Any attempt to balance should have us at six 8s and three 7s, but MLS thinks there's a chance to build a rivalry with Orlando and the Revs in addition to RB.

The funny bit is the traditional NY/Boston thing has gone exactly nowhere. I don't think anyone here or in New England thinks of us as rivals and it does not seem like either the league or clubs have really pushed it except for the scheduling. But something has built, at least a little, with Orlando, even though we have consistently rejected the idea as forced. Their record against us -- helped along in part by the repeated matches -- has created a bit of hatred on our part towards them. I think it's a soft foundation, and if we win 4 of the next 6 we'll be back to thinking who cares about Orlando, but for now there's a little something extra to Sunday's game.

It's forced because of what you just said, no history. We came into being and then it was decided that it was a rivalry because both teams play in the NY metro area. That's not how rivalries work, geographic location can play a part but it's never the direct cause. That's why the biggest rivalries aren't cross-town, a series of heated matches with high stakes (Yankees-Red So) or special circumstance such as two teams who hold differing political ideologies (El Clasico). Banter and sandwich board fights don't cut it.

I think the playing the Revs 3 times per year is because of scheduling and travel. We've had to play a team three times and aside from New Jersey and Orlando where are you going to make the team travel to: New England or Philadelphia.

so what the hell is real madrid vs atletico de madrid ? what is galatasaray vs fenerbache...both in istanbul.

like i said before if it wasnt before the ball was kicked...it is now because of what has happened on the field and even with coaches and players saying stuff. Is it at the level of a barcelona v real madrid? of course not. it will continue growing because now we will get four more chapters of this.

all rivalries start for different reasons/ ways. and in different forms. i mean many new york teams have rivalries with philly ones too....but no ones sees the union as a rivalry game. no one also sees revolution as rivalry game.

i mean if fans/ bloggers are the ones going after each other and its not considered a rivalry then what is?

if its not rivalry go ahead in your nycfc gear and go into pro RB spots near RB arena and see if you get no words or fingers at you

All those rivalries developed over time, this rivalry sprang up simply because we exist. Doesn't that sound kind of hollow?

no.....a team was established for 20 years ...struggled to be relevant in market.....a new one comes in same area and actual city ( defects and all) and people all of a sudden give more attention to this new team. older team jealous and now hates this new team....and so a rivalry is born.

And to add on to the Orlando rivalry, there is also the consideration that they have hired Kreis as their head coach, after many pundits and other people around the league thought he was unfairly fired from NYCFC.

Also, they signed Will Johnson, and he's such a douche.

It's a rivalry at inception because every fan of both clubs was required to make a binary choice - Red Bulls or City? By choosing one, you're rejecting the other. There are 20 other teams in this league that I didn't consciously choose not to root for, there's only one that I actively reject.

NYCFC/RB falls way too easily in to the "classy big brother/whiny bitch step brother" dynamic that we as New York fans have settled into over the years... Yankees Mets, Giants Jets, Rangers Islanders.
