Nycfc V Dc Postmatch

That was, for me, what was so disappointing about the Pirlo free kicks last night. He has two great chances to win us the game at the end, and he didn't even put them on frame.

Im sure kicking the ball off of a sponge didn't help.

Yes he missed on two close free kicks but remember he also delivers the ball into the box on the majority of corners. Would it be nice for him to get a free kick in? Of course...but that isn't the problem.

I think the only direct free kick he has put on net was from an acute angle, an inside of the foot curler. None of the knuckle ball style kicks has gone on net. Given that this technique supposedly relies upon the seams of the ball catching resistance to produce dip and movement, I wonder whether it's a difference in the ball. I'm probably clutching at straws.

Hey, we've got 6 months to clutch at straws or our balls at this point. I'm going with balls.

While I agree with everyone about Pirlo being a bit disappointing when it comes to putting his FKs on frame, his set pieces when he dumps the ball into the box have been absolutely beautiful. A target forward not named Nemec would be a welcome addition, if we could find a spot on the field for him.

Yeh I think the knuckle frees have been the only disappointment. His overall domination of midfield affairs is subtle but has been an absolute pleasure to witness.

So Vic Mensa didn't come to the concert because his flight got cancelled, or he missed it. At least we don't have to pay him his absorbent performance fee. I'm also going to try and have him pay for his expenses like food and towels that we bought for him as he requested. It was raining, it was cold. And the concert was outside (put under a tent) so it was all pretty bad. I got Vic's meat and cheese platter though that he didn't eat. One positive.
Oh U mad huh?

So I've had 2 days in which I went on a semi bender trying to cope with the crap ending of a game/season...

I guess the positive now is we get extra allocation money for not making the playoffs and our overall shittyness. We are all but guaranteed to get a top 5 super draft pick in from what all indications are should be a strong draft.

After winning 3 matches in a row, we lose a heartbreaker on the road and 40% of the board wants to put Pirlo on a boat and ship him back to Brescia.

Sports fans are the worst sometimes.
I hope you're not counting my speculation about his free kicks in that 40%. He's still crucial for me.

Just rewatched the lowlights. Nice cross from AJ on our first goal. Nice cross.

On their first goal, does anyone notice how easy the guy dribbles from the sideline to the 18 for the initial shot? Mena steps up and does nothing, and then AJ is late to step up. why is Aj so deep and not shifted to that side?

Hope I'm not included in that 40% as well. Pirlo has been a soccer hero of mine long before he joined, have an arsenal of NYCFC Pirlo t-shirts, and I think he's hugely important to our success next year. I may even cry real tears if he left us. I was simply noting the fact that he has been more field goal kicker than Maestro on his direct kicks since he joined and, given that, it may have been preferable to have Villa take them while he was in a rut given our margin for error and the need to exploit every edge. It could have been the difference in DC. This is a DC post-game thread, and his direct kicks in that game are a legitimate point of conversation. I'm sure Pirlo's kicks will be an immense asset next season.

Christopher and Jay, I was being over the top to make a point about sports fans reactions to their teams losses.

I know you two are very high on Pirlo.

It's all about 2016, fellas. This team has been a MUCH better squad the last 4 matches. That will translate into a trip to the playoffs next year.

Yes, 2016 should be a better year. 2015, a first year MLS start up team…without a second dependable scoring forward. Team was built to run in a 4-4-2 with a floating diamond. Never found the second DP striker as that spot went to Pirlo who is fantastic on the ball via passing but forced the team to devote a "second defensive player" in the middle of the field and their change their shape. Villa had a good year but remember only 11 of his 18 goals are run of play goals (in 28 games)…the rest PKs. Defensively, the team changed allot as new players came in mid-year but the changes created a lack of sync resulting in the higher rate of goals given up! That's not a winning formula in a game where the best teams are "rock solid" in the backend. Here's looking to a brighter 2016!!!

Yes. Also, who was the guy who fed it to AJ up the sideline by kicking it back over his head. I couldn't make that out, and it was a really pretty move that unlocked the field on that play.

The whole team was ballwatching from start to finish on that play. Nobody closed that guy down, then after the shot went off, the entire DC team ran forward in the box (a couple of them offside, but sadly, not the goal scorer), while we stood flat footed.
