NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

Ah yeah. I forgot about the USSDA thing.

I was under the impression that in fact they only had to play for one of our affiliates for the year, not even necessarily our actual academy team, but yeah, that's a factor. It also helps that the exclusivity stuff means he can't really be poached by other clubs, not for a while yet anyway.

This is from the MLS Roster Rules: "A club may sign a player to his first professional contract without subjecting him to the MLS SuperDraft if the player has been a member of a club’s youth academy for at least one year and has met the necessary training and retention requirements."

IDK what those training and retention requirements are. This is where the MLS cloak and dagger secrecy stuff really bothers me.

What do you mean by the exclusivity stuff? I was under the impression that there is significant overlap between our 75 mile radius and the Red Bull 75 mile radius so we would be competing for the same players.

It's true that there is, but only the Red Bulls can have a say. No other MLS team even comes close to being able to snoop on our turf otherwise. It's a different situation to, say, England, where the exclusivity radius is 90 miles, meaning that even a kid born in the most remote corners of the country can be signed by about 20 professional teams.

So we get all players from the State of New York and western Connecticut?

Our exclusive area is a 75 mile radius around NYC not including a 25 mile radius around Philly. I don't really know for sure what that radius is centered on. The Red Bulls have their exclusive area centered on their training facilities in East Hanover, NJ so I assume that our radius is centered over our training facilities in SUNY Purchase.

What if a kid in the RB area chooses to join our academy?
If a kid lives in an area that overlaps between us and the red bulls, they can choose whoever. If the kid lives in an area that is just a red bulls area, they cant join our academy.

This is like public versus charter schools. The kid should have the right to choose whatever academy they want to attend.

Ben Lederman is going to Florida for the USMNT U17 residency program. We also don't have an academy team for him to join for his age group. I don't know if Harrison counts for us.

Well he is kinda in limbo tho due to fifa putting transfer sanctions on barcelona. If that doesn't get lifted, and if we do have an academy for him to join, would be cool to have him.

  • New England Revolution 75 mile radius from 1 Patriot Place, Foxboro, MA and the entire state of Rhode Island
  • New York City FC 75-mile radius from 1 E 161st St, Bronx, NY 10451, excluding a 25-mile radius from from 1 Stadium Drive Chester, PA
  • New York Red Bulls 75 mile radius from 600 Cape May Street, Harrison, NJ except for a 25 mile radius from 1 Stadium Drive Chester, PA
  • Philadelphia Union 75 mile radius from 1 Stadium Drive Chester, PA except for the state of Maryland and a 25 mile radius from 600 Cape May Street, Harrison, NJ

All players must reside in a team's "Home Territory" for at least one year prior to being added to the team's Home grown Player List.

Players must be added to an MLS team's Home grown Player List prior to entering a four-year college, but can maintain their Home grown Player status during college if registered before entering that institution.

Members of the U17, U20, and U23 U.S. National Teams cannot be added to an MLS team's Home grown Player List, but a player already on a Home grown Player List can maintain that status if selected for a US National team at a later date.

[Any team] can sign up to two players each year from its homegrown talent list to either senior or developmental contracts.

Most likely he wouldn't have been in the program fully for the year requirement, but it's possible. He looks like a great talent.

We also cant add members of the U17 NT to our homegrown list unless they are already in our academy.
