NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

We'll see him next year for a few games. Alphonso Davies made his debut last year at 15 years, 257 days old. Reyna turns 15 on November 13. If he debuts at the exact same age Davies did, it would be on July 27, 2018.

It would be perfect for us if he didn't have a UK passport. He'd be stuck here for the next three years. I still think he'll sign a pro contract and play one or two with us, but he could be gone by 17.

I wish. Don't see it happening.

Why not though? For Gio, it will help him to train with the first team and compete for playing time, and boost his profile while negotiating a Europe move. He could be 17 with a year and a half of MLS experience, plus playing with the U-20's, already earning pro money, and tee'd up perfectly for a move to a big Europe program. If he is just going to bolt straight for Europe before he graduates high school, why wouldn't he have done it already?

perhaps because he has yet to get an offer, he just came to light with the generation adidas cup and this BNT tourney win. he may only have been known to us before but now more people know him.

He's Gio Reyna. He's been known.

We aren't talking about some kid from Africa who everyone finally saw. It's the kid of literally the first Captain America. Not a secret. But I tend to think you guys could be right about him maybe getting a game or two next year. If I were him, I'd try to get a first team debut first and foremost. Changes your negotiation power and value.

known to US maybe then? not to the euro powers. .... i mean pulisic impressed in youth national teams when he was in Florida residency, not when he was in Pennsylvania

there are many "sons of " and that doesnt mean they are automatically known and doesnt mean yea lets go right ahead and offer a contract ....i mean maybe only rangers may know about him because his dad played there.

Yes, the announcer called him the best US squad player and the best player in the tournament. And I will second Midas, he has a big enough last name he's probably already being scouted. His father has plenty of connections. I mean, Man City already knows about him, for obvious reasons. Also, Pulisic becomes a trend. The trend of a tiny fraction of American 17 year olds being ready for big time. I don't know if Gio will be, but if he is ready 2.5 years from now, he won't go unnoticed.

I know your point. What I'm saying is that most kids whose parents are involved in the sport and have the means (financial &/or legal) to go abroad get their chance without YNT. Hyndman and Gooch I'm fairly certain went abroad before any major youth tournaments. Then again, I'm sure they were seen somewhere. So yes, kids do have to play in competitions where they are seen. But Gio, from my understanding, is someone that - while unknown to casual fans even here in the US - was known by the people who need to know about these sort of kids at clubs across Europe. These tourneys are just adding to his hype.

BTW - why Rangers of all places? Plenty of better choices among Claudio's former clubs:

1994–1999 Bayer Leverkusen 26 (0)
1997–1999VfL Wolfsburg (loan) 48 (6)
1999–2001 Rangers 64 (10)
2001–2003 Sunderland 28 (3)
2003–2007 Manchester City 87 (4)

i just went of the top of my head since i thought he was most successful/ most playing time there of all places (aside from obvious man city since he played there and currently works in city group) i could be wrong

EDIT: i aint gonna lie if he goes i prefer german teams since i think he could get some playing time in bundesliga when he gets to that 17/18 yr range

It would be cool if MCFC signed him, loaned him to us for a year (age 16), then loaned him to the Netherlands/Germany or something (age 17, 18) before calling him to the first team at age 19.

How much you wanna bet England is trying to figure out how to convince him to play for them (rhetorical question).... having been born in the U.K., the kid has options and can be considered domestic.

I think I prefer Germany for any American youth talent. I believe they just do a better job in training and in giving young players time.

There are also Americans at most of the big clubs, so it's comfortable for the kids.

I mean, that seems a stretch. 1) He's 14. 2) I don't think the English FA would ever "lower" themselves to competing for a player with the US.

Although, I guess you're just being cheeky, anyway. So nevermind.

I'm not sure this is true. I am pretty certain that the UK does not have unrestricted birthright citizenship as we do here. FWIW, Wikipedia says that to qualify, a child born in the UK must have one parent who is either a citizen, or is "settled" in the UK. It goes on to say that
Settled' status usually means the parent is resident in the UK or a British Overseas Territory and has the right of abode (or similar status), or holds Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), or is the citizen of an EU/EEA country and has permanent residence, or otherwise unrestricted by immigration laws to remain in the UK or that Overseas Territory.
Maybe Claudio or his wife had "Settled" status while he played over there and Jr. is a citizen and has or could get a passport. But do we know that? For all I know Claudio had a temporary work visa and had to leave the country once he no longer was employed as a footballer in the UK (ie he did not have indefinite right of residency).

You may be (probably are) right. I was using young Ian Harkes as my model since John Harkes was playing there when he was born, and Ian has the ability to play in England (if a team had offered/or he accepted); perhaps John Harkes has duel citizenship, or qualifies via kin???

Wasn't suggesting their Men's team, but rather their youth teams. Im sure he's arguably as good or better than most/all in their pipeline, especially in the advanced MF position.

The most I can do on this is raise the question. I really don't know.

Legal in Jersey. (I know this because I saw Hamilton.)

(How long before someone corrects me that it actually wasn't, even if it were, it isn't now, etc. Hopefully, I headed that off at the pass. Please no one waste your time fact-checking my humorously-intended comment.)

As much as I enjoy a good fact check, puns are sacrosanct.
