NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

It gives us, what, 2 years to sign him? Only special talents in MLS get signed before 17 and actually play -- and you could really say that about anywhere in the world. I 'd put money on him signing before his 18th name day.

GIO REYNA TO EUROPE? FATHER CLAUDIO SAYS SON WILL MAKE HIS OWN DECISION ON FUTURE
Ives Galarcep

The NYCFC sporting director and former USMNT captain says his talented teenage son will decide where and when he'll launch his career

Claudio Reyna knows all too well the tough decisions that lie ahead for his son, the talented American teenager Gio Reyna, but as much as the former U.S. national team captain and current New York City FC sporting director has plenty of knowledge to share, he believes the final decision on where the 15-year-old NYCFC academy star begins his pro career should rest with the player, not the parent.

And with a Portuguese passport, I assume he’s then eligible to play for Portugal instead of the USA. That would be a shit storm of epic proportions.

thats a reach i think....almost tinfoil hat thinking there. i mean pulisic got the croatian passport and he didnt swtich ( even when Croatia actually wanted him)....is it possible ? of course but i dont think that was the goal but that goes to another question i had:

I see on twitter saying that gio was born in UK since claudio was there during the years of his birth....but i read elsewhere he was born here in the US.....so which is it? anyone know?

I feel like we've tackled this question before on the Forums. I'm going with: he was born on a cruise ship headed from the UK to the US.

I would presume if he were born in the UK, he would not have to worry about a Portugese passport, but that's a guess.

I researched it in the past. The UK does not have pure birthright citizenship. As I remember, you need to be born there and something else. I don't remember the different ways to satisfy the second condition. But if anyone wants to search for posts by me with the obvious keywords you can probably find it.

There's some fancy French term for it but it has to do with blood. Jus sanguine maybe?

U.K. And Italy hard to get. Ireland easier. Portuguese easier.

At that point, all bets would be off.

He has represented the USA youth teams, I think, so he is cap tied with the exception of a possible one-time switch.

He does not currently hold a Portugese passport, so it is possible that he is fully cap tied - you can't file a one-time switch unless you were already a citizen of the second country at the time you represented the first country at the youth level. Of course, it is possible he is already a Portugese citizen due to his grandmother's status and just hasn't gotten that recognized. A lot of this depends on how the legal status works.

Of course, this is all academic as I can't imagine in a million years he would choose Portugal - unless his development falls off and that's his only option.
You can’t be cap-tied when you’ve never played in an official competition. Until he plays in a FIFA sanctioned tournament, that wouldn’t apply. I’m not sure there is one before the u17 CONCACAF championships.

Even so, I think it is “eligible”, not necessarily “already has”, citizenship.

I saw a reference to him playing in a U15 Concacaf championship, but it might be that it doesn’t count as official.

And some U18 snubs. Alexsi and Veljko are NYCFC Academy players as well.

There are so many kids in the pool at that age, and comparing talent vs uneven competition is near impossible that it’s splitting hairs to worry if a kid has been left out of a camp. The coaches will work their way through the pool and eventually see everybody.

If you look on the USDA website, you can see the full rosters for our academy teams. We're starting to poach players from other academies, mostly non-MLS linked one. But look at this one. He played last year for the Cosmos academy. His name...

Joe DiMaggio.

Imagine if this kid plays one day at Yankee Stadium.

Hopefully by the time he is promoted, that won’t be the venue. Still, it would be awesome. He would need to change his number from 7 to 5.
