To clarify, we have purchased one extra, so we have 9 instead of 8, but all 9 are filled.

Who are those 9 foreigners, and who's likely to leave to make way for Pirlo, Tefu, Mena, etc.?

Transfer window is July 8-August 6. Problem with adding "bigger players" to complement our DPs is we still have to stay within salary cap. So we add the best we can within that restriction.

I understand that. And I guess as a new club you don't have much pull yet for the best 'regular' players out there. But I'm sure after Pirlo and Lampard start playing and you guys move up the table it will become easier to sign players. I just would have thought you'd be looking higher than a guy who's not even an international for Colombia (Mena, even though word is he is decent) - in my mind every foreign player at a MLS team should be an international (or at least former international).

I think you have an inflated view of MLS and under value our salary restrictions. NYCFC is already a draw for any player not getting starting minutes for a CL or Europa level team. But salary restrictions mean that outside of DPs very few national team players come here. A player on the Colombia national team can make 2-10 times what we can pay by going to Europe where there are no salary restrictions.

If I recall correctly, green card holders don't count as foreign players, so it is not neessarily accurate to simply count the number of players from other countries.
How do you guys understand the mysterious and ever changing rules of MLS?

I'm convinced that they just randomly make up new rules whenever it's convenient.

Yeah, have had a look at a few rosters and checked out last year's player salaries. It's a bit like Fantasy Football really, but I kind of admire it. I like the structure and theoretically even playing field it brings.

Thought there was supposed to be word about Tefu today also. Unless I had that confused with Mena.
We may sign Tefu AND Mena, which would give us an unexpected and welcomed glut on defense. Imagine all of the sudden we get to choose from Facey, Calle, Iraola, Angelino, and possibly Tefu and Mena (in all honesty, I do not know much about Tefu and Mena but am optimistic with what I have read and heard on here and elsewhere). The times, they are a-changin'!

I can't figure out how we are getting all these international spots:
Villa, Lampard, Pirlo, Iraola, Facey, Angelino, Nemec, Calle, Alvarez, Johannssen is ten. Plus Tefu and/or Mena is 12.

We could conceivably play a staring XI with no americans in it.

I know we have 11 with the trade we made during the expansion draft. I wouldn't be shocked if Alvarez is that 11 spot. We now have a good amount of midfield depth.

I don't think it has been mentioned but he also said they were still working on Gonso
