Patrick Vieira Appointed As NYCFC Coach

Vieira still has 1 year after this season on his deal...I hope he doesn't leave us...

EDS -> NYCFC -> arsenal in less than 5 years would be an insane progression but I guess it's possible. On the optimistic side maybe he and his family like it so much in NYC that he's selling his place because he plans to stay with us beyond next season.

Any player or coach that goes from NYCFC to a Champions League organization is a huge boon for NYCFC. It would be rough to lose Vieira so quickly, but I would trust CFG to be able to find a top talent who is the right organizational fit for a replacement. The next up-and-coming manager would be more than willing to follow Vieira's path.

I'm sorry, what's the connection here?

The coach of New York City FC is selling his home in the Manchester, England suburbs, and also there may or may not be an opening at Arsenal.

What does one have to do with the other? This is ridiculous tabloid stuff, even for the Daily Mail.

It depends on how it's viewed. At this point without having won anything with NYCFC him being considered for the Arsenal job is still mostly based on his accomplishments as a player rather than the rep he's built with us as a coach. I'm not sure the soccer world as a whole would see it they way you are hoping they will.

Yeah, on Twitter I wrote that you can't really take anything away from this. He could be buying a home in New York for all we know.

- He's selling his house in Manchester because he's buying a place in New York...
- He's selling his house in Manchester because he's going to be buying a place in London...
- He's selling his house in Manchester because he's going to be buying a bigger place in Manchester when Pep leaves and he replaces him...
- He has an great understanding of real estate (talking with Mix) and realized that he should sell his place in Manchester and instead buy a place in New York because of the investment and long term value...

He's selling his house in Manchester because he no longer lives in Manchester.

So if Wegner stays through 18/19, the position would become vacant in May 2019. Vieira's contract ends in December 2018. Vieira leaves NYCFC at the end of his deal and assumes the Arsenal job after Wegner leaves? If he does leave?

Lock down Vieira to an extension if we can...please Reyna!

We know that NYCFC needs a coach that the DPs and internationals will respect. Kreis clearly didn't fit that role, I don't think another person from the MLS coaching carousel will do the same either.

Honestly, getting three years out of Vieira sounds close to right, though I wish for four or five. He's not going to be here long term if he is any good, and I think he's showing that he's good enough for a promotion. Straight to Arsenal? That's a bit of a leap of faith on their part, but he's a leading candidate, and if not there, somewhere else will "promote" him.

I always suspected three-ish and done. If that is the case, we need a critical transition plan given that PV will have spent 3 years implementing a unique system and having imported a roster of players to fit that system. Assuming that it (still) is working it would be a shame to bring in a Kreis-like MLS one dimensional schemer to abandon the work and take three steps back. Maybe one of the assistants will be ready to ensure some continuity, or otherwise buck the trend again and bring in another outsider who can think outside the MLS box.

I would feel slightly okay having Lattanzio who coached twice last season because of Vieira's suspensions step in as an interim when Vieira leaves. However, Lattanzio was only on the sideline for those games. Vieira did the game plan, training, etc. You can't really mark up those games to Lattanzio.

And more worrisome, when a coach goes, they take all the managers/technicians/physios/trainers with them. We'd likely those the entire system we have in place. Only Rob Vartughian was kept on from the Jason Kreis era.

The only positive spin to this would be that if Vieira goes to Man City, he's likely familiar with the people behind Pep and if Pep leaves, he could fill in directly and Man City keeps their guys, we keep our guys. That's though dependent on what Pep does and where Vieira goes. If he goes to Arsenal, that's another direction.
