Patrick Vieira Appointed As NYCFC Coach

Well folks believe it or not I have been thinking about this for a few days since I knew Viera will be the guy taking over. And I have to be honest, now that it is official, I am pretty excited. I think first and foremost this will garner the respect of Villa and Lampard, and perhaps Pirlo if he stays with NYCFC next year. On top of that, there is no question that this guy knows soccer in and out. I think the young players we have will respond to him without question. I don't think guys like Midas and his gang can ever say Patrick Vieria doesn't know soccer or has no clue if we have a bad season again. The guy knows soccer and I just hope he presses the right buttons and is able to deal with a locker room of such diversity in terms of talent and personalities.

I am pretty excited believe or not and really looking forward to the offseason and seeing how this team plays in 2016. The good news is that this is a 3 year contract so we know for sure he will be here for at least 3 years.

Has he promised playoffs, mls cup, us open cup, or supporter shield yet?

A bit of a surprise only because it seemed Vieira didn't want this job. As he seemed to have other options I hope and presume this means those reports were wrong. The alternative is he was offered something else -- eg being heir designate to Pellegrini -- as an inducement. Which is slightly troubling if it's the case but not necessarily catastrophic.

Ives mentioned that several years ago he approached Vieira when MC was touring the US during pre-season (when Vieira was coaching EDS) and asked him if he would be interested in coaching MLS someday, and Ives said that Vieira's response and corresponding body language was "pl-eaaaaaaase" with a very negative overtone, that be basically looked at Ives like he had 3 heads.

You wonder how so much can change in a short few years, but it is telling.

This is a big gamble by CFG and PV. Up to now he has been coaching the EDS team in Manchester, with the mandate on grooming players for the first team, rather than winning. Of course they do try to win and it's always nice to lift a trophy, but that wasn't his mandate. So this move is a very big one for him and will determine if he really can move up to first team level. I can understand people's apprehension on here regarding this appointment. I really hope it works out, because the fall out if he doesn't will be ten times worse from the sacking of JK.

Pros of this hire:

- Vieira has had a couple years managing youth teams so he may be able to get a little more from the youth on NYCFC's roster. In MLS it is important having your role players performing well to compliment your DPs. The most successful teams have guys at all age and salary levels contributing. The stars can't do it all on their own.

- Viera will be motivated to do well at the job because if he does well he will be offered a more lucrative coaching position in the future.

- Vieira is not a lifer MLS coach so he could bring new ideas to the table in regards to successful playing styles in the league.

Cons of the hire:

- Vieira is a CFG shill of the highest caliber, and will likely have to follow CFG marching orders of playing Villa, Lampard, Pirlo and Mix at the same time, since those four sell the most jerseys and snapback hats. Those wishing for Poku to become a bigger part of the team might not get their wish.

- This hire is clearly a training stint for Vieira. CFG is reinforcing the NYCFC 'farm team' moniker with this appointment. Vieira is going to want to do well here, but if he does, he will bolt for Europe the first chance he gets. Vieira is not going to be a long term hire and NYCFC won't be able to build continuity with him. So the club will get 1-2 seasons max from him if he does well, maybe a season if he doesn't (like Kreis).

- Vieira has managed youth but managing three big egos in Lampard, Pirlo and Villa will be a challenge for him. There is a big time salary gap among the NYCFC roster. It's not going to be as simple as managing a bunch of hungry kids who are playing hard to move up the football totem pole. All 3 NYCFC DPs are here to collect their paychecks and live in the big apple. He has to motivate them to want to win trophies.

Interesting to see who he brings with him as assistants. And more interesting is who the hell is going to coach this team in PR. At least he'll be here tomorrow to see the squad.

First pass, without reading the thread, Vieira ticks some of the same boxes Kreis ticked when CFG selected him. So, that would seem to be a plus.

On the con, I'm not necessarily enthralled with the idea that a man who reportedly didn't want the job was hired for three years.

Good Luck, Patrick.
#KreisOut #VieiraIn

And so it goes.

If they want us to be a winner they are doing a really, really bad job so far. If you really want to win you hire a coach with a proven track record. Not someone who has only been coaching children. You also sign DP's like Giovinco or Dos Santos. Not some washed up player who played 9 games to help us sell t-shirts.

The reason why MCFC is better because of CFG is money. Plain and simple. They've spent over a billion so far on their squad. It's not some genius plan. They just dumped stupid amounts of money on players. In MLS it doesn't matter how much money they have. They can't just buy success because of MLS restrictions.
So far....it's been 1 season.

QPR have spent lots of money as well and are a level below the PL. It's not just money. You have to have a good management team in place as well.

Would you suggest we copy your team, and have a town hall to scream about our new manager, then not show up to playoff games when new manager proves we don't know shit about coaching in MLS?

But the issue is if this hire meant to groom MCFC future manager or right the ship at NYCFC? I think there can be a balance but I would be very unhappy if Vieira doesn't finish out his contract and is beaming up to the mothership early.
Only 1 season huh?

Yeah, you're right. You'd be an absolute fucking moron to make a decision after 1 season....
kreis wasn't the man. They accepted this and made a move they are fully entitled to make. Put the Kreis lotion & napkin down & walk away. It's done. He's gone. Accept it.

Most likely the goalkeeping coach who they kept on.
According to the EOS article, Rob Vartughian will lead them in December camps and PR trip. My question is can Vartughian really expect the respect of the mighty DPs?

agree overall, but not sure 3 yr contract means 3 years stay. we have all seen that movie before.
Another data point: just checked with colleagues in France and they all say this is a great coach potential and they have been hoping he would be the future national team coach for them. So they are all rooting for his success as well. So we get some additional French fans here :)

I suspect one of the DPS will become player coach or maybe kolo toure.
If he has someone to take care of the ludicrous way players are acquired he should be fine ,he's been around world class players all his career and should be able to spot a decent player or two.
In all honesty with a return to arsenal,Fulham and Newcastle all after him I'm surprised in football terms he's agreed to nycfc

1. I called this back on July 19, 2015. In a semi-joke post listing several possible new managers including Sir Alex and Alexi Lalas, I wrote, "5) Patrick Vieira: I think he'd appreciate the better pay." So, I know as much as Eric Wynalda, if not earlier than he does.

2. Hopefully this means that Facey and Angelino stay. And that we also get some very cheap, very good talent from EDS.

3. He's not going to stay here forever, but in the time that he is hopefully we win some trophies. Best case, we win a lot and build a system that works and is sustainable. And if we don't, you can't really think of a different coach/system that would have been better and available.

4. 2016 is getting more exciting.
