Would we rather match up with NJ or Atlanta in the 2nd round of the playoffs?

NJ. 1. Travel purposes. 2. Domé seems to have them figured out. 3. Revenge & bragging rights 4. If we finish 2nd in CCL (this is the thread for it) it would mean either remaining Eastern team (us or Atlanta) in conf finals would secure us a CCL berth by winning the cup.

I think we can beat Atlanta. It would be a tough series, but we played so well against them early in the season and their defense is so shaky. So I'll take them.

100% New Jersey.

1) I want New Jersey as far away from MLS Cup as possible.
2) If we beat New Jersey in the 2nd round (and are second in the CCL table) then that puts us with a 50% probability should we face Atlanta in the Eastern Conference Finals.
3) I'd rather be in an outdoor stadium (compared to Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta) that's fully enclosed earlier into the winter than later.

Seriously fuck this shit.

WEDNESDAY 9/26:
CHI @ NYC 7:00
USOC FINAL - HOU 3 @ PHI 0

SATURDAY 9/29:
NYC 1 @ MIN 2

SUNDAY 9/30:
NJ 2 @ ATL 0

Screenshot 2018-09-30 21.06.38.png

SATURDAY 10/6:
NE @ ATL 3:30
NJ @ SJ 10:30

NJ is now 2 points up with a match in hand and owns all the tie breakers. Not much season left to play.

Our last 2:
10/21 @ DCU 3:00
10/28 CLB (maybe played at Citi)

Their last 3:
10/6 @ SJ 10:30
10/21 @ PHI 3:00
10/28 ORL 4:30

I mean it's not crazy to pass them in points, as they have 2 away matches. But considering they just beat Atlanta away, I expect them to get 9 of 9 points going forward. Just because that's the shittiest thing that could happen to us. I really hate this season.

Circling back to this after a delay of a couple days. You and I discussed this at the game Wednesday night. I disagree, and here's a bit more on why. I think we can't beat either Atlanta or RB unless we regain our best form. I think at our best we played dominating football against Atlanta. I think, while in our best form, we varied from utter shite against RB to an evenly fought win. I completely ignore the double red card game, which result was based on how each squad reacted to the imbalance and is non-replicable. I also think RB is playing the best ball in the league right now. If you forced me to bet a grand on MLS Cup today, the only reason I might not bet on RB is I don't like predicting when a streak will end and RB has this history of playoff catastrophe. I would just rather let them play the Crew first, take our chances against Atlanta, and hope the Crew pull an upset.

I also have zero expectation for NYCFC in the playoffs. By that I do not mean low expectations. I do not expect we will bomb out immediately. I mean I have no idea whatsoever what to expect, and I won't be shocked or even mildly surprised by any result.

I agree they are the hottest team in the league. But I think Dome had some answers to counter their tactics that PV didn’t. Also, we avoid turf in altlanta and sitting half our team because of it (yeah that’s a thing now). If we long in r2 or r3 doesn’t matter to me, we still lost. When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. Give me NJ in r2 and let’s see what this team is made of.

Resting a guy on turf in the regular season does not equal doing the same in the postseason. I can't see them keeping guys off the turf in a postseason scenario.

Any result over next 2 matches by Atlanta or lost point by NJ clinches CCL for them.

Because this may be over by next update, here's the remaining schedule:

SUNDAY 10/21:
CHI @ ATL 3:00
NYC @ DCU 3:00
NJ @ PHI 3:00

SUNDAY 10/28 (Decision Day):
PHI @ NYC 4:30
ORL @ NJ 4:30
TOR @ ATL 4:30

Also, NJ & ATL are playing teams with nothing to play for on decision day.

Yeah so this thread is over. Atlanta #1 (congrats), NJ #2. This has been going on since our spot was stolen last season. Now it's over by our own incompetence in the 2nd half of the season. Lock this shit up, I'm so done with it.

At this point, I'm glad we are not in CCL next year. If the CONCACAF social media intern were in charge, and if we had qualified based on last year, I'd be scared as hell of 2019 at this point. Best case scenario would be we flame out in the first round and concentrate on the regular season ASAP. Worst case would be a deep run that ends in failure and wreaks havoc on our schedule and destroys our MLS season they way it has done to every MLS team in the last 5 years that went on a deep CCL run (except for the Red Bulls this year). Up until July or so, I would have agreed that the risk was worth it. Let's test ourselves. But this club is in freefall right now and has no idea what it is doing. We desperately hope Dome, (or somebody new) can turn it around with a solid offseason and camp. The last thing we need is an extra tournament to complicate things.
