What an utter waste of two good Saturday hours. I'm not even going to bother commenting on what happened.

OK, so here's my Question of the Week: what can PV do to fix our crippling mental issue with playing in important games? Or do you think it's just a case of poor management/team selection/recruitment?

To my mind, this team has a serious issue with not being able to raise their performance in games which matter, and I'm starting to think that perhaps it's down to PV's lack of experience in how to mentally prepare his players - whatever he's saying to them before the games, it's just not the right thing. The longer this goes on, though, the more I worry that PV just doesn't have the right ability to mentally condition a dressing room the right way. When the team is chasing games they often seem to raise their game (though not always enough to actually fight back) but they just cannot get off the blocks in the right gear when the chips are down. That's my take, anyhow.

Thoughts?

You hit the nail on the head - PV gets both outcoached and he can’t deliver the inspiration needed to motivate his players. For a guy that holds his players to such a high standard that infractions get them banished forever, at what point does PV get some humility and admit that he’s as much of the problem as any player????

I want to say it’s mental but I think more on Patrick than the players. I think he set them up to fail in the first half. We saw a different team in the second and for good reason, they were better prepared to beat the press.
First half we couldn’t get past the press and our defense was stretched every time RB attacked.
Second half we made changes at the back and looked completely different tactically.
He got it wrong out of the gate and by the time he could fix it the damage had been done. Whenever a coach makes 2 changes at half time you know he knows he screwed up.

#notreadyforprimetime. We got outcouched and outplayed. Vieira is to blame.

The shout box was amusing when there were 7 people all shouting that “_______” was the worst player on the pitch and it was all different players.
Well yeah, but Chanot was horrible and he was yanked, so not all of us were being petulant little kids with our commentary.

Every time we play them, they come out roaring with their high press and we're like, "whoa where'd that come from? What's happening" So I think you have to pin some of that on PV and the staff. But also the lackadaisical, almost half hearted effort from EVERY player... I mean I don't know who to blame for that. Everyone I guess. I just don't get it.

No one was good, but Ben Sweat lost that match. Each of the first three goals was from his side and due to his lack of challenge (and effort). Our roster is improved, but between Sweat's ineptitude on defense and Matarrita's health, we could use a left back.

The game was terrible, but the team is still in good position long term, with a large run of home matches soon. Losing to Jersey still burns.

Not being prepared for the press is 100% on the coaching staff.

I thought PVs pre game comments were a bit odd this week - overly praising your rivals coach just before you play them hardly inspires you to think it means as much to him as it does to us. He could of course be saying more behind closed doors to the players but I still thought it was off.

We looked totally unprepared for what their game plan was. The gap between our defense and our midfield seemed massive, just inviting them to run into acres of space.

Our front 3 will rarely have a worse game. Villa was trying silly flicks and tricks when he should have been a bit more boring / safe and just took a touch and found a blue shirt.

Bergets is a mystery to me. Not just in this game but all so far. I hope he’ll settle in but a wide forward position look so totally alien to him.

Wonder if Jack Harrison is available on loan once Boro finish their season?

That was as bad as the 7-0. Unacceptable. I've been a fan of Vieira's, but if he's going to fuck up games like that, there isn't much hope for him or us.

Sweat is the low hanging fruit to blame but it’s also (pardon me) the ignorant argument. The first three goals were on Chanot. Sweat may have been part of the play, but Chanot was the issue on every one:

#1, Chanot leaves his man, BWP, to do an offsides trap, fcks it up because three other defenders didn’t push, and BWP gets the ball in space to go 1v1 on the keeper. Sweat was actually marking two men on that play because he had zero help.

#2, Chanot heads a weak ball straight to a RB player who then starts the counter. The D was caught out of place with a runner splitting Callens and Sweat. If anything, Callens had to step up to challenge the player on the shot, but he didn’t and he ball ricocheted off his leg and into the net.

#3, BWP scores an easy header because Chanot isn’t marking him tight. Yes Sweat was on the guy crossing the ball, but crosses don’t score and it was a 50/50 ball that looped in. Chanot has to put his body on BWP on any cross.

#4 was on Ring.

It’s easy to blame Sweat because he’s the least talented on the squad, but on any team, the least talented doesn’t make/break a game, because they’re strictly role players. The guys that win/lose matches are the truly talented players, and if the team gets whomped this badly, it’s because the guys with the skill to take over a match aren’t doing so. Had RB launched every attack down Sweats side and broken his ankles with cutbacks to successfully get off shots that scored, then yeah, he’d be to blame, but that’s not what happened today, and blaming Sweat is a false narrative.
