Red Bulls - Postmatch

The thing about Villa is that when something works for him, he definitely becomes more brash about trying it. After his wonder goal from 55 yards, he hit a few more -- even though it's a stupid strategy and none came close to connecting. I honestly think the same thing happened with the flick. He set up a goal with it against Atlanta and it's gone from being a 'throw it in here and there' type of play to something that he is overusing in the games since. This time it bit us on the ass.

He's obviously a wonderfully talented player, but to me it does seem like baby step by baby step he's becoming more and more brash/selfish. You can tell by the way that the team is playing when he is in there vs. when he was out injured.

each time he tried it the goalie was out of position... its not like hes just saying fuck it im gonna shoot. He just missed the other times. Im okay with him taking those shots. Im sure zlatan is going to keep taking them as well.

I gotta be honest with you, I don't remember the specifics of every time he has launched one from deep. We've obviously seen the two he tried to put past Blake. The first one in YS he was alone, on balance, and it was a great opportunity for him to strike the ball. In Philly (Chester?) he had a tiny bit of separation, he was running head-on to the ball while balanced, and he struck it well.

A few of the other times he's tried it, I feel like he's tried to pull the ball across his body or been off balance and the shot was never going to work -- even if the keeper was off his line. I just remember him launching a few and thinking "why would he try that there?"

You know who should not try those goalie-off-of-the-line long shots - Maxi. His are like the long shot version of the failed Panenka because they always end up a soft pop-up falling squarely into the GK's arms.

Seeing Maxi’s attempt drives home just how hard it is to hit those kind of shots well enough to have a chance.

Kind of gives you even more respect for Carli Lloyd when you think about it.

Ok moving on.

So you can't see from this angle how far Robles was off his line - at which point the question becomes "why didn't Villa score a bicycle kick from halfway?"

It's perfectly clear from the position of Maxi and Adams that a bicycle kick from midfield was clearly what Villa intended but he mis hit it and it came off as a flick. I think we solved it.

I think you could say this for all players, anyone remember year 1 when Jacobson scored a fluke screamer from the top of the box and then proceeded to spend the rest of the season sending 3 shots a game rocketing over the cross bar from 22 yards out?

Jacobsen didn't score until late in the season though. Then he only took shots in 3 of 9 games after that...

Villa has been doing flicks and backheels since Day 1 when the guys on the other end of it where Grabavoy and Velasquez.

You defend the flicks like they were moves of brilliance but they didn’t work then and yet he would try them every single match with no little to no success. It was a point of contention on the forums that he would constantly waste opportunities trying to be too slick.

The flicks only sometimes work now. DeGrozz DeGrozz ’s point is akin to that just because you win a round of Roulette by betting on #22 doesn’t mean you try #22 with every other spin; do something safer like betting on either Red or Black rather than a single number; at least then your odds go way up on success.

Actually I didn’t defend them, I stated the fact that he has been doing them since he was in New York. DeGrozz stated that it worked in Atlanta so he is trying them all the time now, as if he hadn’t always been doing them.

And guess what...he is going to continue to do them. Sometimes they will work, sometimes they won’t.

Did I ever tell you the story of my 23rd birthday? June 22nd. Went to AC with some friends. Didn’t really know what I was doing and put 5 chips down on 22 at the roulette table. Thought they were $1 chips. They were $10 chips. I felt like a moron till it hit. Fun birthday! No, I did not try it twice.

I don’t remember and not sure exact roulette rules. But sounds about right. I went from scared shittless, bc I only had like a couple hundred bucks to gamble that night. To holy shit! It was a good birthday.

Also left out I put 5 chips on 6. So it was like Half the $ i had that night.
