San Jose - Postmatch

San Jose has more Audi Player Index Points then us. It's a garbage metric.

Yeah Audi's a garbage metric but San Jose also had 1.45 xG to our 0.83, 19 (9) shots to our 9 (3), 138 attacking-third passes to our 113, 71 duels won to our 55, 11 fouls to our 17, etc. Hard to imagine a stats-based model that wouldn't give them more points than us.

Sure, but if Berget was getting dinged 210pts for missing his shot, then Sean Johnson alone should’ve docked San Jose about 2k points with his crazy-assed saves. And San Jose only scored 1G to our 2G, so that should also separate the numbers.

The five yellows were a bit ridiculous consider is was a feisty game by both teams and San Jose only picked up one yellow card. That being said I’ll continue to defended that Maxi’s yellow card is stupid and should be rescinded. ThrowInGate is allowed. I was watching that and thinking of Man City when they closed out the game at Man United. Did everything right there. Then Maxi takes the ball and rolls it to the top of the 18 box. He gets a yellow card for time wasting at the referee adds an additional minute. Childish refereeing.
The thing I take issue with, is that the end of the game is called so completely different than the rest of the game, once the clock becomes an issue.

The same thing that Maxi did there happens on a much more egregious level throughout the game, because they are attempting to slow the restart up. Yet cards are not given. Much slower throw-ins or goal-kicks happen throughout the bulk of the game than ones that result in yellows at the end.

That is the issue that I usually take with these types of cards.

And then you have the crap that Steffen pulled in last year's playoff match and no card was given.

Audi Index has a ton of flaws, but it generally shows who carried the play and created the better chances during the game - which SJ did as dummyrun said above. They set up shop in the NYCFC final third in the second half. So it’s not fluky that a stats based model would favor SJ.

Villa would usually kill the Audi index because of how he would carry play in the final third (passing, etc) while minimizing negative actions.

What’s important is converting chances which NYCFC did. Wondo had two high quality chances and he Wondo’d them over the net. A great team converts its chances and Audi Index will not show that.

Watched MLS Soccer's Instant Replay and they agreed it should have been a PK when Maxi was brought down in the box in the 86th minute.

I may not be remembering correctly, but I think Weibe and Warshaw have concluded we should have had a PK (or two) that wasn't called in every game so far. If I am wrong, its definitely been 4 out of 5.

Since the middle of last season, there has been a certifiable effort by PRO to Fck over NYCFC with a lack of PKs and far more cards than is normal.

It sure feels that way, but we are a bit biased here. I’m not sure how one could prove that based on calls/non-calls.
Because I take perverse pleasure in reading the comments on Instant Replay each week, I can confirm that fans of at least 17 clubs are convinced that PRO refs are uniquely unfair to them.

There’s no way Atlanta is one of the 17 because they get gifted PKs every damn week.

And you’re a masochist for reading those comments.

At least in our case this season’s Instant Replay has noted demonstrably bad calls against us in every game, with nothing going in our favor to balance things out.

To be fair I have noticed that, and Wiebe and Warshaw aren't notably NYCFC partisans (not even of the Matt Doyle "I just like how they play" variety).
The notable thing in the comments is that on every such play, there is a highly upvoted comment (sometimes multiple comments) saying the Instant Replay guys are wrong and the NYCFC player is guilty of simulation. That concept has fully ingrained itself into MLS fandom. NYCFC players are just presumed to be faking it.
People are going to see what they want to see.

Next to much of social media, the comments section of articles on webpages is one of the worst inventions ever on the internet. Message boards are one thing where discussion is expected, but hot takes on news articles is unnecessary.

What's interesting to me is that despite all the controversial calls, I haven't felt particularly aggrieved this year. I think some of that is that in a couple of instances I've disagreed with the IR guys that the call should have gone in our favor. Mostly, however, it's because we've been winning.

Does that mean we are the Barca or Brazilians of MLS? I will take that.
