Gio wasnt a star for juventus. He was on the outs and was frustrated he wasnt getting the playing time. Bigger clubs didnt want him and he wanted more money than the smaller clubs could afford. Hence came to MLS. I dont think he comes over if another of the top 4 clubs would have decided they wanted him.
So the best target is a top 4 club with a frustrated player who we can offer more $ to. Every top club with more than 11 men on the roster has one of those.
Sure, Gio always wanted a bigger club, but rather than take a pay cut and stay in Europe at a smaller club, he came stateside for the cash. He seems very happy now (save for Toronto’s playing surface). Not everybody will chase the money, but I guarantee that many would if offered more than their options in Europe. Some players make decisions based on their aspersions, while others make lifestyle decisions that set their families up for long term happiness.
Example: I won’t take a multi year job I absolutely hate unless it’s paying FU level money, but if one company is paying one and a half to twice that of another with better perks but the quality of work is less “sexy,” I’d personally jump on it in a heartbeat because of what the long term implications are for my family. Five years of work is the equivalent of 7-10 depending on the financial package - that is game changing. It’d be the same with soccer players who have a limited playing career - entice them with money they cannot refuse because a 25yo may have 7-8 years of solid play left in Europe but in MLS he could make the equivalent of 10-15 years of salary/bonus.

A bit late, but no he doesn't. When he left Juve he was making €2.2 million a season, that's net. Italian salaries are always reported as net. The tax rate for athletes is 50% so he was making €4.4 million a year.
Still, €7 million a year is a nice payday for anyone and is a pretty good reason to make the move, especially when going to a nice city like Toronto.
Thanks for that info. It has always set my head spinning how some leagues report gross salaries and other net, and then without knowing bonuses, taxes, etc. it's just hard to compare.

Club hired consultants to run some focus groups next week about the stadium. May or may not mean anything. Carry on.

I would make certain that our new stadium has higher and wider goals.
Yeah it can be confusing. You'll hear people like, oh we can sign Dybala, he's only making €6 million a year and we can give him €9 million. Nope, he's really making €12 million. It's strange, but it's the way that it's always been reported in Italy. I guess they prefer to report what they're actually bringing home instead of what they're making.
There was a lot of confusion about this when Giovinco signed for MLS. Yes, he was getting a higher salary here than in Europe, but it wasn't as grossly misstated.
