Yeah it can be confusing. You'll hear people like, oh we can sign Dybala, he's only making €6 million a year and we can give him €9 million. Nope, he's really making €12 million.

It's strange, but it's the way that it's always been reported in Italy. I guess they prefer to report what they're actually bringing home instead of what they're making.

I prefer it this way better. Haven't been to Italy in a while but i remember when i was living in Germany all stores listed prices of goods with the tax already included. So if it said 5 Euros i was actually paying 5 Euros at the cashier. Give me the bottom line number of how much something costs or how much i'm getting.

Problem is you can't do it in US/Canada due to multiple overlapping taxing jurisdictions. Even someone who plays for a team in Texas or Florida pay non-resident income tax for every away game in a state/province that collects it. Play in NY, otoh, and you have to pay resident tax for home games, non-resident for all away, and then calculate a complicated set of offsets and credits. There's just no way to say someone gets paid $X million and keeps Y% of it so the after-tax is $Z..

100 percent right. just way more convenient the other way.

Also depends on what you're discussing. This came up in the context of what it takes to lure someone from a European league to MLS, so after tax is the most relevant figure. But if you're discussing cost to ownership, etc, which is often of concern, then the pretax figure is what matters, and if you quote what the player receives it ends up just as confusing or even misleading (intentionally or not).

There was a lot of confusion about this when Giovinco signed for MLS. Yes, he was getting a higher salary here than in Europe, but it wasn't as grossly misstated.

It makes a difference, they do it the right way. $5mm in NYC is much different than $5mm in Austin tax wise.

Sure, Gio always wanted a bigger club, but rather than take a pay cut and stay in Europe at a smaller club, he came stateside for the cash. He seems very happy now (save for Toronto’s playing surface). Not everybody will chase the money, but I guarantee that many would if offered more than their options in Europe. Some players make decisions based on their aspersions, while others make lifestyle decisions that set their families up for long term happiness.

Example: I won’t take a multi year job I absolutely hate unless it’s paying FU level money, but if one company is paying one and a half to twice that of another with better perks but the quality of work is less “sexy,” I’d personally jump on it in a heartbeat because of what the long term implications are for my family. Five years of work is the equivalent of 7-10 depending on the financial package - that is game changing. It’d be the same with soccer players who have a limited playing career - entice them with money they cannot refuse because a 25yo may have 7-8 years of solid play left in Europe but in MLS he could make the equivalent of 10-15 years of salary/bonus.

How many players are in MLS from the top leagues? Has to be very very little. Idk what our scouts look for, but there's got to be plenty of young players looking for pay or playing time. I don't follow other leagues as attentively as Serie A, but I always see no name players with the perfect attributes for MLS and say they'd be great here. Has to be the same with the other top leagues. Maybe the foreign agents are the problem.

You have to remember some of these younger players may already be under contract and are prospects so the big teams may no be so quick and willing to give them away. Many young players signed by top clubs get loaned out to lower division or lower table teams. They have to either be bought from the big clubs or wait until their contract expires to make the switch themselves at that point.

True and these younger guys that are loaned out to other clubs are moneymakers for the big clubs

So.... Anyone thing to the focus group on the new stadium? Isn't that happening tonight and tomorrow?
It’s tonight. I was planning on it, but soccer coaching duties (following holiday duties) unfortunately now conflict. Too bad. I can confirm (as expected) that they are requiring NDAs.

It’s happening tonight and I’ll be arriving soon. They said we have to sign an NDA so...

But I’m getting the vibe it’s more about non-stadium things rather than a full blown stadium focus group.

Okay, it was exclusively about a new stadium.

That being said, I don't feel more or less optimistic about a stadium announcement.

I'm sure this is step 1 of dozens of steps the team will take involving fans and City members in shaping what a future stadium will look like and what a home game experience will be.
