If there is a competent, competitive league solely for your best Academy players and young draftees, why invest the money to run a USL side that will lose $2-3 million a year?

Because for the best academy players, a U19 league isn't as good for their development and doesn't give them the direct pipeline to MLS that might dissuade them from leaving for free to Europe at 18. Keeping those guys long enough to sell them is the best way to help offset the cost of a USL team, and it's more fun for your average fan who only sees the kids when they get to the first team.

im not concerned or worried about USL here, to me is the whole stadium situation, like i said is gonna look real bad if they pull it off AND its 25K stadium. i do think even more people will be lost from nycfc ST numbers and even attendance will suffer.
Flip side, what if this is just the “kick-in-the-ass” CFG needs to make the final push to get some substantial headway on the site in the Bronx? They just simply cannot allow an announcement for another stadium beat them to the punch. Might as well close up shop then and fold if it were to come to that.

Lots to digest here.....

1. CFG either has their site wrapped up or they’re screwed. Optics will be horrible for Villa to get his team’s stadium rolling first.
2. If MLS wasn’t on board with this, wonder if it created a wedge with his negotiations for a contract extension?
3. What if it’s a long con and Villa sells/rents the stadium to CFG - his name is more palatable than CFG in the city so it’s an end around? Would assume his club would still play there as well.
4. (Very unlikely) What if after it’s built, CFG disbands (sells franchise rights) NYCFC since they realize their limitations with winning, either back to the league for a new club in another city, with Villa getting an MLS buy-in with Queens being NYC2, or directly to Villa’s group and his team “promotes” up to MLS?
5. What if NYCFC is looking to rebrand in a few years??? Assimilate Villa’s club and growth in Queens since a new club has an easier time attracting fans than an existing club that’s dug a hole with fans.

queens want a team badly....i dont think they care if its USL....thing is you gonna lose like half nycfc support cuz i know lots of people that live in queens/ long island.
This isn't even 2% close to completion and I've already mentally left the club. Fresh start, no fcking lampard fiasco. Hopefully 100% or at least 51% owned by villa, which is ownership i can get behind.... oh man im getting a little chubby thinking about it.

I mean I can still follow NYCFC in the MLS, but I can finally stop giving these fckers my money. I know i can do that now, but i am holding onto my founder status because as of now nycfc is the only 5 boro team and that's whats important to me and therefore these dbags have my financial support at the moment, but I really want to drop them like a bad habit asap. I probably will eventually if they don't get moving on a stadium, but a queens team will accelerate it for me.

nope i dont feel that way at all, this will go down as really bad PR....even if its 10K stadium

EDIT: the whole president/CEO change confirms this to me. they are lost in their search.

i know many will become casual ( if that?) nycfc fans if they get stadium in the willets point area and will go every weekend, it wont matter if its USL. and with villa being the face of it will push more people to go.

You guys are looking at this USL/U19 debate through the lens of a fan.

Look at it through the lens of a business owner, specifically our Club. Why would you throw $3 million a year down the toilet to let’s 5-7 kids a hear play professionally and then have to carry another 15 guys who you have no interest in ever signing?

I write this having read zero words of the linked article: there is no conceivable way a 25k seat soccer specific stadium will be built in NY for a team other than NYCFC and there's no way a 25k seat stadium will be built for the primary use of a USL team, given the attendance history of the Cosmos.

Also, what advantage would Villa get having an unaffiliated team vs. an NYCFC affiliate?

Should I have read the article?

Yes.

you also want them ready to be pro's in MLS so then you can sell them and make that cash? davies played in that Vancouver 2 team a bit then went to MLS.

Bro you and I and many of my friends will all be sitting right next to each other and tailgating together in queens for many years to come. When do we make a Queensborough Forums?

Might help if Villa and investors own half the team and carry proportionate share of the costs. I take your point though.

They’re going to be ready to be pros by practicing with our first team.

How many Academy players do you envision being sold for cash? MLS averages about 2 per year. So basically, each team sells one Academy product about once every ten years.

It’s all about what the desired outcome is. If the desired outcome is to get your kids more playing time, the competition isn’t important. If the desired outcome is that you 18-20 year olds are already with the first team, then the competition doesn’t matter.

Why lose $3 million a year so 15-17 year olds can play against men?

One note. I’m not saying that I agree with that lone of thinking.

I’m saying that will be the rationale given for not having a USL side.

lol practicing is not same as playing against pros...come on you know this... they need to play these minutes even in USL there are pros they going against.

i dont know how many are being sold ( especially with our ownership) but i do know i want these kids having minutes against pro teams so if and when they get to MLS they ready or have some experience dealing with playing pro. Scally aint getting that by practicing and then being sent to U19 nycfc team. He needs USL minutes if hes not in plans to get good minutes in first team.

Also to get 18-23 year olds significant playing time beyond the 30-75 a month they might get with the first team. I still take your point, which is really that NYCFC won't blow cash on limited value, but don't undersell what value there is either.

Read it. It makes no sense. An appropriately sized venue at Willets is a waste of the space and anything north of 10k without NYCFC as an anchor tenant would be an albatross.

Why wouldn't they build a stadium for NYCFC and have a USL team play there?

You read it because Villa is now partnering with the two individuals we thought were our advocates. Go back now and rethink all of the conversations we had on here every time Moya and Katz ever spoke about a soccer stadium. And now realize they were talking about Villa.

Why would we invest in a 22 year old player? Like, ever (non goalkeeper).
